Greetings,
On the road again!
On Monday I was in Washington, DC, visiting with
our vibrant alumni community during our DC Wildcat
reception. The DC alumni community, not surprisingly,
includes a high percentage of lawyers who build their
interesting careers in, across, and working with various
federal agencies. We were graciously hosted by Quarles & Brady at their beautiful
new offices.

We'll be in Seattle tomorrow for a breakfast
reception (there is still time to register). Be sure to
check the footnotes for upcoming summer receptions in
your area.
The 30th of June may just be a date in the
middle of summer for most alumni, but it is the close of
the financial year for the college, and thus a time to
assess progress toward our financial goals. This time
last year, we set the ambitious goal of 20% alumni
participation. We aren't there yet, and hope you will
help us cross the finish line on Thursday in a strong FY
2016 position.
To demonstrate the power of scholarship support, we
feature Caylin Barter ('13) and her career path in
environmental law.
Your support changes students' lives.
Your contribution goes directly to the student
scholarship fund where students are empowered to
realize the professional dreams that can shape the very
fabric of our legal community. Much more than a
tax-deduction -- your support shapes a student's
future.
If you have not already given
this fiscal year, please consider adding your
contribution by the close of business
tomorrow -- "In Favor of Students." Alumni support and
participation, in any amount,
matters.

The Pursuit of Preservation
-- Caylin Barter ('13) |
Caylin Barter is currently the Flow Restoration Director
at The Freshwater Trust and is an avid explorer of the
American outdoors with her husband, Stan.
Caylin arrived at Arizona already having travelled
down her own river, including work as a climbing
instructor, Hotshot firefighter, and backcountry
wilderness skier.
For Caylin, Arizona Law was the perfect fit for her
passion.
"I chose Arizona Law
because of its natural resources law program as well as
an excellent generalist legal education -- while I knew
going in that I was interested in environmental law, and
particularly water law, I wanted to gain a solid, broad
foundation and exposure to different paths within the
legal profession."
During her law school tenure, she served as the
senior managing editor of the Arizona Journal of Environmental Law and
Policy, a natural resources law clerk for the Office
of the Solicitor at the Department of the Interior, and
a law clerk for the US Attorney's Office in
Boston.
With the support of alumni and donors -- your
support -- Caylin was able to follow her passion. Her
impressive academic credentials and scholarly work
earned her the Robert and Ann Clark Scholarship in
Environmental Law, the Sol Resnick Water Resources
Fellowship, the Lillian S. Fisher Prize in Environmental
Law and Public Policy, and the John Hawkins
Professionalism Award.
In fact, she credits the Fisher Prize, which
included publication by the Udall Center for Studies in
Public Policy, with putting her in contact with top
environmental lawyers. It jump-started her career in
water law.
During the three years Caylin spent pursuing a JD,
her husband was also pursuing a three-year Masters of
Architecture in the glass-walled building across
Speedway Boulevard:
"We had each been
out of school for a good number of years before going to
graduate school, and, to be honest, we didn't know if we
were going to cut it. All the stress and hard work
culminated in a beautiful coincidence when we were both
selected to speak at our respective commencements. It
was so meaningful for each of us to be given the
opportunity to stand in front of our family, classmates,
and teachers, and to thank them -- and each other -- for
supporting us and believing in us."

Caylin began working with The Freshwater Trust in
June, 2014, and has been in her current position for a
little over a year. Although her office is in downtown
Portland, Oregon, her work is focused on improving
streamflow in rivers across the state through voluntary,
market-based water deals with farmers, ranchers, and
municipalities that would otherwise withdraw streamflow
for consumptive use.
|
At work with The Freshwater
Trust. |
More broadly, she says, The Freshwater Trust works
to develop enabling policies, regulatory programs, and
on-the-ground projects that demonstrate the
environmental, economic, and social benefits of
restoring freshwater ecosystems.
"My road to The
Freshwater Trust was winding (just see my LinkedIn profile) but suffice it to say
that the skills, relationships, and war stories
collected along the way have been key to building trust
and momentum with a diverse set of stakeholders. Life
experience helped me define what it means to have a
career I love; UA Law helped me build a springboard to
get there."
Thank you Caylin for dreaming big and following
your passion into environmental law.
And thank you to our scholarship
supporters who helped Caylin to achieve those
dreams.

This is the last Wildcat Wednesday -- Letter of
the Law I will draft for a few weeks. During the
month of July, the Letter of the Law will
undergo an "alumni takeover," with several alumni guest
authors offering you their perspectives on all things
Arizona Law.
For those of you who have offered your support this
fiscal year, in dollars, advice, time, and friendship --
thank you. I look forward to catching up with everyone
"next
year."
Warmly,
Shaping
the next century of legal
education
