Greetings,

This week we recognize the many employers and judges who provide our students with jobs, critical training, and an opportunity to launch their careers in the law

We also share our special effort at the Arizona Bar Exam - Bear Down Luncheon.

Until the footnotes,

Building Career Relationships in Phoenix

The Career Development Office (CDO) is working in strategic ways to strengthen our Phoenix presence. After a year in Phoenix, Leah Won, Director for Career Development, who is graciously hosted by our friends at Gammage & Burnham, has worked with dozens of employers to meet their employment needs. She has also counseled scores of students who want to work in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. The CDO team has redoubled its efforts as they incorporate new team members to build relationships and enhance career opportunities with events such as the "Meet the Employers Reception".

Expanding on our three-part mission to serve students, alumni and the profession, on campus interviews (OCI) this year will be held both in both Tucson and Phoenix -- a reminder that we are the university for the entire state of Arizona, and that the single largest number of private and public employment opportunities in the state are in the Phoenix area.

This focus will allow our students and alumni greater access to employment opportunities throughout the state, while providing employers increased access to students and alumni.

Students meet with employers at their individual tables

As part of this exciting new approach, we held our "Meet the Phoenix Employers" reception this past month at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix Campus. Our goal was to provide a social atmosphere for Phoenix employers to mix and mingle with students and recent graduates planning to participate in the OCI process. With over 80 attendees and a large contingent of current students, it was an evening filled with energy.

We would like to thank all of our honored guests. We would also like to thank the following firms and public agencies for their reception attendance and participation in this year's OCI:

Students talk with attorneys from Ryley, Carlock, & Applewhite

I would like to extend a special thanks as well to those who were not able to attend the reception but have been longstanding supporters of our OCI and plan to participate again this year.

Our Career Development team is happy to assist any firm or agency in its recruitment process at any time of the year and in any format, not just through OCI. The CDO team has the ability to reach current students, recent graduates, and experienced alumni through our interactive CareerCat job bank and recruiting system. Please contact Karen Kowalski, Assistant Dean for Career Development to discuss how we can best support your efforts.

A great career can start with a simple conversation

Celebrating our Local Partnership
Judge Sally Simmons

Every path to practice is different. We find that this statement has become even more true over the past several years. Students take deliberate and practical steps to create career paths for their future. At Arizona Law, those steps frequently involve the Pima County Superior Court.

The courthouse can open doors to extraordinary experiences and new opportunities. We have an exceptional local bench, and current students in summer and in-term externships and recent graduates hired as full time judicial clerks develop skills across civil, criminal, family, juvenile, probate, and mental health law.

As a new event to recognize our longstanding relationship with the Pima County Superior Court, we held a Pima County Superior Court Reception in July.  We hope this is the start of a new yearly tradition. This was an opportunity for faculty and staff to connect with members of the court. And more importantly, it was an opportunity to convey our thanks.

A special thank you to our honored guests:

Judge Dean Christoffel ('74)
  • Presiding Judge Jeff Bergin ('91), Family Bench
  • Judge Sean Brearcliffe
  • Judge Christopher Browning ('81)
  • Associate and Presiding Judge Kyle Bryson, Superior Court and Probate Bench
  • Judge Dean Christoffel ('74)
  • Judge Carmine Cornelio
  • Judge Richard Fields ('78)
  • Judge Lori Jones ('91)
  • Judge Leslie Miller
  • Judge Alyce Pennington
  • Presiding Judge Kathleen Quigley ('86), Juvenile Bench
  • Judge Lee Ann Roads
  • Presiding Judge Sarah "Sally" R. Simmons, Superior Court
  • Judge Christopher Staring
  • Thanks, too, to all attending judicial staff.

To our friends in Maricopa County, we are headed your way soon.

To the members of the federal bench, we look forward to connecting with you again the spring.

And to all of our esteemed judicial alumni, if you need an extern, a term clerk, or even a last-minute clerk, we are here to help. In most years more than 20 percent of our graduates serve as clerks for state and federal judges, and the commitment to service and the desire to learn at the side of our great judiciary is deeply engrained in the law school community. Please feel free to contact Virginia Clarke, our Director of Judicial Clerkships.

Arizona Bar Exam - Bear Down Luncheon

Last week, nearly 100 students from Arizona Law sat for the Arizona Bar Exam.  A team from the Alumni Office and Career Development Office was in Phoenix to support our recent graduates with a luncheon on both days.

Special thanks to alumna Erin Norris Bass ('12) and Steptoe & Johnson for the generous use of their conference and meeting space.

Examinees enjoy a lunchtime reprieve from the Phoenix Convention Center

To all of our graduates who sat for exams in other states, we have enjoyed feeding you ideas -- and pizza and sandwiches -- over the past few years, and we hope that your graduation and entry into the profession does not diminish your passion for Arizona Law. Our commitment to our graduates -- our friends and extended family -- is a lifetime commitment. If the Alumni Office can help in any way, please reach out. The doors are always open.

Networking Noshes are Back: Join Us!

Help Arizona Law students and network! Our talented students are eager to engage with alumni and practice their networking skills. Alumni are encouraged to join us on the second Thursday of every month for a networking reception.

Networking Noshes are held on campus and provide our students an opportunity to meet legal and business professionals, practice their networking skills, and learn about different practice areas. We are looking for interested alums who can join us at the law college for these events. Our first Networking Nosh will be September 11th. It is an informal reception and runs from 4:30 to 6 pm. If you are interested in participating, please email us at alumni@law.arizona.edu

We've reached the homestretch.  New members of the community have started to arrive and settle in. The whole new class will be arriving for orientation in just over two weeks.

This is one of the most exciting moments of every school year where our hallways will once again fill with passionate minds and fresh ideas.

As we start a new school year, I hope you will continue your support of Arizona Law, perhaps even venturing into something new like our Networking Noshes or joining a Homecoming Reunion Committee.

Warmly,
