Greetings,

I hope that each of you has the opportunity to start the new year off with a healthy amount of fun, camaraderie, and renewal.

Thank you to all of our 2016 donors. You've made the new year brighter for Arizona Law students.

We return to the hallways of Arizona Law this week refreshed and looking forward to the semester ahead and to a great lineup of alumni and campus events, which we preview for you below. As always, we would love to see you at any of our events.

Until the footnotes,

Marc

On the evening of January 27 we welcome Professor Geoffrey Stone as the featured speaker in the 36th Isaac Marks Memorial Lecture

His talk is entitled, "Getting to Same-Sex Marriage."

Geof is the University of Chicago's Edward H. Levi Distinguished Service Professor of Law, the former provost and law school dean at University of Chicago, and the author of many books on constitutional law. His next book, "Sex and the Constitution," will be published in March 2017.

Established in 1979, the Marks Memorial Lectures enrich the curriculum and the community by featuring speakers from law, jurisprudence, and public policy. The College of Law is grateful to the late Judge Jack Marks and his wife, Selma Skora Paul (pictured at right), a 1956 graduate, for their generous support in endowing the lecture series in memory of his father, Isaac Marks.

The Marks Lecture is free and open to the public. Register here.

On February 16, the College of Law is pleased to host the 1st Annual Peter Chase Neumann Lecture on Civil Justice, featuring New Mexico trial attorney Randi McGinn

McGinn's trials have resulted in changes in corporate and police department practices and in substantial verdicts and settlements for her clients. She recently authored the book, Changing Laws, Saving Lives: How to Take on Corporate Giants and Win.

The lecture begins at 5 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Contact Marissa White for more details and registration.

This lecture series is generously supported by and named for our 1964 alumnus Peter Chase Neumann (pictured at right). It is a cornerstone of the college's Civil Justice Initiative.

The University of Arizona's William H. Rehnquist Center will host an all-day Immigration Federalism Conference at Westward Look Resort & Spa, Tucson, on February 24.

The agenda runs from 9 to 5 and includes panels on constitutional dimensions, law enforcement, state and local governments, and DACA/DAPA. Panelists are Hiroshi Motomura, Joseph Landau, David Rubenstein, Dan Kanstroom, John Leavitt, Annie Lai, Peter Spiro, Rose Cuison Villazor, Ming Chen, Roxie Bacon, Dominic Draye, and Michael Kagan.

For more information, contact Bernadette Wilkinson. Register here.

Lee Marshall Holtry spoke with students in November as part of the Leaders in the Law series.

The Leaders in the Law series connects leading legal professionals with Arizona Law students throughout the year. We have an active Leaders in the Law calendar but there is always more room for additional speakers -- maybe you! -- who are willing to share their expertise and experiences with Arizona Law students.

In the spring semester, we -- and our students -- are eager to hear from Nicole Stanton ('00), David Cole ('76), Steve Bosse ('79), Jim Lundy ('74), and Jeff Willis.

Contact Jonelle Vold or Chris Gast for more information.

Shannon Keller O'Loughlin ('01) spoke in the IPLP series in the fall.
A number of other regular speaker series enrich our college throughout the school year, including:
  • Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy (IPLP) distinguished  speaker series. First up is visiting speaker Derek Kauanoe on January 30. Find out more.
  • Program on Criminal Law and Policy (PCLP) speaker series. The first speaker of the semester is Professor Jim Diamond on January 18. Find out more.
  • Environmental Breakfast Club. The next speaker is Gene Giacomelli on February 3. Find out more.

For forty years my immediate family -- now 15 people with my parents, my two brothers and their families, Chris and the kids -- and various dogs and cats have gathered together in Mammoth Lakes, CA, to celebrate the new year, to downhill and cross-country and skate and hike and build snow forts and throw snow balls, to play Trivial Pursuit with even more cousins in the waning hours of each year, and to cook and eat and laugh.

This year we had a typically wonderful and relaxing adventure, including the more than 700 mile drive each way. And I'm pleased to report that on one hard day of skiing I outlasted a 14 year old -- but then he would tell you which one of us was far more ready to go again the next morning ...

Warmly,
