UPCOMING EVENTS

Greetings,

We have two surprises this week.

First, this edition will be "Wildcat Tuesday," as Wednesday is the 4th, and we don't want our newsletter interfering with a good barbecue!

Enjoying the State Bar of Arizona convention among Arizona Law alumni and friends.

Second, this is Megan writing.

Marc and his family are away. Along with other College of Law staff, I represented Arizona Law at the state bar convention last week. You'll find more photos below.

Thanks to each one of you who stopped by to say hello at the Arizona Law table, coffee cart, or our Thursday-evening reception.

It was wonderful to see so many members of our community recognized for their accomplishments during the course of the convention.

Bear Down,

Megan O'Leary

Arizona Law Community Members Recognized During Bar Convention

Congratulations to the many individuals and organizations with Arizona Law roots who were recognized with awards during the 2018 State Bar of Arizona convention, including but not limited to:

Alumna Anne M. Ryan ('84) received the bar association's Sharon A. Fullmer Legal Aid Attorney of the Year Award.

The Tom A. Karas Criminal Justice Awards were presented to two Arizona Law alumni, the Hon. David G. Derickson ('69) and Walter B. Nash, III ('71).

The Michael C. Cudahy Criminal Justice Award went to Kimberly H. Ortiz ('93).

The Hon. Michael Pollard, a 1972 alumnus of the College of Law, was honored with the bar association's 2018 Special Merit Award. Among his recent accomplishments, Judge Pollard helped establish the Tucson Veterans Treatment Court and Regional Municipalities Veterans Treatment Court.

The College of Law has been an active participant in Veterans Court, with our Veterans Advocacy Law Clinic, under the direction of Professor Kristine Huskey.

Los Abogados Hispanic Bar Association, with connections to many Arizona Law alumni, was awarded 2018 Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Award. Among its contributions to the Arizona legal community, Los Abogados sponsors the Hon. Valdemar A. Cordova Scholarship in honor of Arizona's first Latino federal court judge. Judge Cordova was a 1950 graduate of the college.

The Arizona Women Lawyers' Association (AWLA) recognized longtime LCA board member Judge Margaret Houghton ('76) with the Sarah Herring Sorin Award during its annual breakfast. At the breakfast, current 2L Karen Donderewicz was recognized as this year's Mary Anne Richey Scholarship recipient.

Also during the convention, the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education recognized alumnus and longtime Arizona Law Board of Visitors member Patrick McGroder ('70) with its Walter Craig Award. The same organization presented Dennis Lusk ('78) with the Mark Santana Award.

I've had a great first eight months leading our efforts with our alumni and development team at the College of Law and the University of Arizona to engage and support our more than 8,000 law alumni.

I want every alum to know what is happening at your college. I want every alum to get to know our fabulous current students and faculty and staff, to help advise prospective students, to assist current students and graduates on their career paths, and to let us celebrate your accomplishments and careers and life moments.

With your help, we will also enhance the financial support for our students, faculty, and programs and keep legal education both great and as affordable as possible.

The State Bar of Arizona convention was a wonderful way to deepen my friendships with many alums and to meet many more alumni and friends of our college.

Thank you!

Take Care,

Megan
