2018 University of Arizona Law Convocation

On the afternoon of May 12, the 2018 University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law graduates were welcomed into the ranks of alumni by Christine Thompson ('01), incoming president of the Law College Association, who urged the audience to embrace the unexpected challenges and great promise of their next step.

Anna Maria Chávez ('94), the 2018 convocation speaker, addressed the graduates, emphasizing their new role as catalysts and moral leaders.

Graduating JDs Mia Hammersley and Kayla Bernays and graduating SJD Benjie Parsalaw were chosen by their peers as the Class of 2018 student speakers.

I'll close by sharing the touching and inspiring words of this year's graduating class speakers:

"It has been an honor to study and learn beside you. Simply put, we are blessed." -- Benjie Parsalaw

"Despite my many frustrations with our legal system and the systems of oppression that it often perpetuates, I emerge from these three years with an unshakeable sense of hope, largely thanks to the relationships that I have formed here at Arizona Law." -- Mia Hammersley

"Thank you to our classmates who seemed to decide early on that competition was less important than being decent." -- Kayla Bernays

I always close our formal graduation by quoting from two of my favorite 20th century philosophers, John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

And this year I didn't just quote their words. Challenged by several members of the 2018 graduating class (and risking disdain from my 11 year old daughter Evie who sings in the Tucson Girls Chorus), I sang the following lines, fully in the spirit of the insights of our graduates:

And in the end, the love you take
Is equal to the love you make.

Warmly,
