Greetings,
I'm happy to report that sweater weather has
arrived in Tucson, at least for those of us who have
resided in the desert for a few years and grown less
cold-tolerant. In other words, it is 70 degrees! It's a
great time of year outside, a busy time in our hallways,
and visions of a great Wildcat basketball season are
coming into focus.
This week, in honor of Veteran's Day and the
many Arizona Law students and alumni who have served in
the Armed Forces, we take time to tell the story of our
Veterans' Advocacy Law Clinic. Being a "vet
friendly" school is an important part of both the
Arizona Law culture and the broader university. The
University of Arizona has been recognized nationally
for its vet services including the office of Veterans Education & Transition
Services.If you know any veterans considering higher
education, please encourage them to consider the
University of Arizona.
We also say thank you to Pat McGroder ('70),
the Arizona Supreme Court, and the Arizona Court of
Appeals (Div. II) for spending time with us on campus
over the last week.
Also, we need your help. In the spring, we
will give current students access to the new online alumni directory. But, we need your help
to ensure that you and your classmates join the
directory so that our students can see the true breadth
and depth of our alumni base. If you have not yet signed
up, please do. If you have not received an invitation,
or it has expired, please contact us
so that we can send a new invitation.
If you are
in touch with classmates who have not signed up, please
encourage them to do so. Unfortunately, we do not
have current email addresses for many of our alumni.
If you use social media and have the ability to
reach your classmates through those channels, please
do.
To incentivize directory sign-ups, we will do a
weekly drawing for UA apparel from
among all new members of the directory. We'll also do a
monthly drawing from the entire pool of
directory members so far. And, we will send a shirt to
anyone who signs up 5 new members from among their
fellow alumni. If you sign up friends, send us an
email to let us know, including their names and
email addresses.
Please help us make the alumni
directory a tool worthy of our alumni and our
students.

Veterans'
Advocacy Law Clinic
|
 The Veterans'
Advocacy Law Clinic provides law students the
opportunity to assist military veterans, service
members, and their families with legal issues. Legal
problems often serve as barriers to successful
reintegration into civilian life. The clinic director is
Professor Kristine Huskey.
In the last year, students contributed
3,500 hours of work in the Vet Law Clinic in exchange
for academic credit or summer salaries. These hours
represent approximately $350,000 in free legal services
to veterans, active service members, their families, and
communities.
At any given time, the Vet Law Clinic
typically represents over 150 clients in the two local
veterans' treatment courts in Tucson. Alumnus
Matthew Randle ('14, Army veteran) helps supervise
clinic students in vet court. Over the last year,
the Vet Law Clinic also provided legal assistance to
four Vietnam vets with PTSD to try to upgrade their
discharge status so they could receive benefits. Angie
Menard, a 3L and Tillman Scholar (Army veteran),
represented a WWII veteran before the US Court of
Appeals for Veterans Claims. She obtained a remand which
resulted in an award of $3,000 in attorney fees to the
Vet Law Clinic.
In addition to representing veterans on
criminal charges, Vet Law Clinic students Dan Roberts,
Dan Benjamin, Jordan Huffman (currently Army Reserves),
and Jonathan Leitenberger (Army Reserves veteran)
represent a Vietnam-era veteran in a disability benefits
case under the supervision of Sandy Mishkind ('72), an
Arizona Law alum and friend of the Vet Law Clinic.
Dayna Michael (Army veteran) also participates in
the Clinic.
Recently, the Vet Law Clinic, together with
veterans' law clinics from law schools nationwide,
organized a national conference on veterans' legal
issues. Last week, Vet Law Clinic faculty and six
students traveled to Washington, DC, to participate in
the conference, which was held at the U.S. Capitol.
Professor Kristine Huskey and Clinic Fellow Lori Lewis
spoke on several panels, and students Wes Stiner (Marine
Corps veteran), Jahna Locke, and Angie Menard gave
presentations on their work in veterans' treatment
courts. Autumn Kycia, Jess Garrard (Army veteran), and
Jessica Schulberg also attended the conference as well
as a productive meeting with Representative Martha
McSally.
Professor Marcy Karin, the director of ASU's
Work-Life Law and Policy Clinic, recently interacted
with our Vet Law Clinic team at the national conference
and wrote to me recognizing their great
work:
"In my experience,
our home institutions don't always hear about the great
work that people do in the community. So I wanted to
send a quick note to let you know how impressed I was
with my counterparts at U of A. I look forward to
continued collaborations with Kristine and the rest of
the Vets Advocacy Clinic team as we collectively work to
fill the rather large access to justice gap for our
state's military community."

Kristine Huskey
 Clinic Director
Kristine Huskey was chosen among the newest group of
Tucson's thought leaders to participate in the Tucson Public Voices Fellowship.
A partnership between the Women's
Foundation of Southern Arizona and the UA, this year's
fellows will add their voices to the national dialogue
through common forums such as the Huffington
Post and many others. Several Arizona Law
alumni voices have also been part of this important
project over the years, including Isabel Garcia ('78),
Daisy Jenkins ('96), and Carmen Armijo Marriott ('81).
We applaud Kristine and are proud to have our faculty
represented.
STUDENT
Angela Menard ('17)
3L student
Angie Menard is a U.S. Army veteran. She
was a combat medic in the 2nd Armored Division (FWD)
during the Gulf War. This summer, Angie interned
for Margaret Middleton, who is a clinical faculty member
at the Yale Law School Veterans Clinic and executive
director of the Connecticut Veterans Legal Center
(CVLC). The CVLC provides legal services to
veterans that have mental health issues, substance
abuse, and unstable housing or homelessness. While
she was there, Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal
gave Angie a Certificate of Special Recognition honoring
her military service, academic achievements, and Tillman Scholarship. This summer, Angie
also attended the Tillman Leadership Summit in Chicago,
IL.

ALUMNUS
Matthew Randle
('14)
Matt Randle ('14), an Army veteran, former
student and post-graduate fellow in the Vet Law Clinic,
and a current supervisor, is featured on the recently
launched Got
Your 6's #IAm campaign, which
highlights veterans' multi-dimensional attributes,
challenging stereotypes and misconceptions in order to
normalize perceptions of those who have served in the
military. Matt lives in Tucson with his wife and
children. He created his
own firm earlier this year, practicing in criminal,
family, and juvenile law.

Last week's "Conversation With" Patrick
McGroder was part of the Civil Justice Initiative fall
speaker series.

In
memoriam
 Vanessa Guess-Johnson
('95) passed away on November 3, 2015. Vanessa worked at
the college in the law library since 1978 and has always
been the lead singer of the Sisters in Law at
graduation. She was the glue of the technical services
department in the library and will be greatly missed. A
memorial service is being held today at Mt. Calvary
Baptist Church in
Tucson. |

Annual Civil Justice Lecture
Arizona Law welcomes Richard Fried, Jr. ('66), who
will give the 3rd Annual Civil Justice Lecture, a public
presentation on trial practice and plaintiffs'
representation. Fried will speak on "How a Plaintiffs'
Lawyer Can Improve the Lives of
Victims."

- Lynne Traverse, Firmwide Lateral Recruiting
Manager of Bryan Cave, gave a presentation and
hosted lunch for the students on November
3. Her presentation, "The Employability Zone,"
discussed how to obtain summer associate positions by
improving your messaging.
- Jeremy Kapteyn ('11) participated in a
recent Snell & Wilmer IP panel, "Snell &
Wilmer: The Life of an IP Lawyer." The
firm's Phoenix office visited Arizona Law at lunchtime
on October 6 to discuss what it is like to practice IP
law in Arizona as opposed to other places nationwide
and how students can work on obtaining a career in IP
law.
