Greetings,

Every week we share with you the stories of alumni, students, and faculty whose support for our community makes us stronger.

This week I would like to honor our Arizona Law Fellows collectively.

And I'd like to offer my special thanks to the UA's Greg Byrne and his wife, Regina, for agreeing to be our speakers at this year's Arizona Law Fund Fellows reception.

Until the footnotes,

Marc

The Impact of Annual Giving: Arizona Law Fellows

Arizona Law Fellow Mary Ann Stubbs
at the Constitution Day Event

Every dollar you invest in us is a statement that you want to see Arizona Law maintain and enhance its reputation, and that you want the next generation of legal professionals to experience the same great education that our alumni have received for one hundred years.

In an effort to recognize the substantial annual commitments of donors, the Law College Association (your Arizona Law alumni association) established the Arizona Law Fellows. Fellows are donors who commit to annual gifts of $1,000 or more ($500 or more for our recent graduates).

Arizona Law Fellows fund the areas of critical need within the college: scholarships, research, student programs, recruitment, development, and so much more.

Fellows are publicly recognized for their giving leadership, and receive special invitations to events throughout the year. As alumni, partners, and friends, we invite you to become Fellows and make your mark on Arizona Law.

It is an exciting time to become a Fellow. During our 2015 Centennial Year we will be rolling out a new program for annual givers, including Fellows, and invite you to join us. For more information or to make your Fellows gift and receive your invitation to this year's reception featuring Greg and Regina Byrne, please contact Jonelle Vold at jonelle.vold@law.arizona.edu or 520-626-1330.

Greg and Regina Byrne

Greg Byrne

Next Thursday, September 25th, Greg and Regina Byrne will spend the evening mingling and talking with the Arizona Law Fund Fellows. This unique and exclusive opportunity will allow Arizona Law alumni and friends the chance to hear directly from the Byrnes and ask questions about Arizona athletics. We are very grateful to Greg and Regina for devoting their time and energy to promoting Arizona Law and helping us kick the ball through our goalposts.

The upcoming Fellows reception is just one example of the support Greg Byrne has offered to the college. Greg has been a steady advisor for and supporter of Arizona Law. He has encouraged the development of courses and the discussion of fascinating legal issues related to sports at both collegiate and professional levels.

In addition, for the past few years, he has sent personal letters to all of the incoming 1L students congratulating them on becoming Wildcats, and encouraging them to engage in athletics, and to cheer our great teams.

At the University of Arizona, Greg Byrne is synonymous with excellence. He currently serves the Vice President of Athletics and is the University's greatest advocate for a proud tradition of success both within the Pac-12 and nationally.

Greg and Regina on Game Day

During his tenure as Vice President of Athletics -- in traditional terms, the university's Athletic Director -- he has championed five core principles:

Graduate Student-Athletes;

Follow the Rules;

Represent the University and Athletics Department in a First-Class Manner;

Practice Sound Fiscal Management; and

Compete for Championships.

These principles have defined a new era of strength and tradition for the University of Arizona. They constitute a vision that resonates across campus and influences our efforts at the college.

Under his leadership, the Wildcat Athletic Department completed construction on the Lowell-Stevens Football Facility, built a video board in Arizona Stadium, added a new men's basketball locker room, and began a renovation project for McKale.

Before coming to Arizona, Byrne was Mississippi State University's Director of Athletics, where he was the youngest athletic administrator in the Southeastern Conference and the youngest to lead an athletic program at the NCAA Division I-A level. He also comes from a proud tradition of athletic management -- his father, Bill Byrne, was the athletic director at Texas A&M and Nebraska.

Greg and Regina have been married 20 years -- on their recent anniversary Regina announced a 20-year contract extension with a signing bonus! They have two teenage sons, Nick and Davis.

Footnotes
Fred Marquez

Hon. Alrfredo "Fred" C. Marquez (1922-2014)

We send sincere condolences to the family and friends of Judge Alfredo "Fred" C. Marquez ('50), who served on the US District Court for the District of Arizona from 1980 to 1991, when he assumed senior status. He was a devout supporter of his beloved University of Arizona football and basketball teams, and an avid golfer. Fred will be forever remembered as a man with high integrity and a deep love of family.

Fred's legacy and vision for any attorney or judge was appropriately stated in his 1991 Legal Legacy interview with the Arizona Historical Society, "You hope that you are a role model and help other kids aspire to get an education and get ahead in the world."

Thank you to everyone who joined us over the past week for the annual Constitution Day Supreme Court Review and our first "The Mind & the Law"  lecture series. Both were a tremendous success. There are many more lecture opportunities in the weeks ahead.

Whether it is the established tradition and sparkling quality of our superb Supreme Court Review -- or provocative new initiatives like Chris Robertson's "The Mind & the Law" series, we aspire to achieve for Arizona Law the goals Greg Byrne has set for the Arizona Wildcats: representing the University of Arizona in a first-class manner and competing for championships.

Warmly,

Marc Signature
