Greetings,
I had
two sure-fire conversation starters when I was a young
lawyer -- the 1997 National Championship Arizona
Wildcats basketball team, and that I was Tom Mauet's student. I wasn't his
student the way a generation of newly minted, nervous
BarBri studiers from around the country were his
"students" -- each one learning the essentials of
evidence through a TV screen broadcasting his dry humor
and deep voice into rooms from New York to California.
Nope ... I tried cases in front of him, right there in
the Burton J. Kinerk Courtroom, always anxious to hear
what he thought and how he'd do it.
Tom ignited a passion for trial work in me and so
many who learned from him. Nearly 20 years later, I
share letterhead with Burt Kinerk ('62), and I still seek
guidance from Professor Mauet.
Tom's trial advocacy books remain my most dog-eared
and well-worn references. Before every trial, I
turn to them for refreshers, tips, and inspiration. I am
not alone. My law school classmate, Kevin Boyle ('97), who went on to clerk
for Chief Justice Rehnquist, shared my experiences in
the Trial Advocacy Program. Kevin is now a nationally
recognized trial lawyer in Los Angeles. My law partner,
Ted Schmidt ('77), met Tom when he
first joined the law school faculty, and together they
worked to develop the Arizona College of Trial
Advocacy.
With apologies to my latest obsession, the
musical Hamilton, this three-day
seminar puts the audience in the room where it happens
-- taking them into the real-time deposition, mediation,
and full trial. We will then watch jurors deliberate and
return a verdict.
One of Arizona Law's newest faculty members, Barbara Bergman, who takes over the
Advocacy Program from Tom Mauet, joins us, as well.
This morning I had the pleasure of introducing
Barbara to the Trial Practice Track attendees at CLE by
the Sea. It is exciting to welcome Barbara and usher in
the newest chapter in Arizona Law's strong civil justice
and trial practice program.
P.S. Don't forget to scroll to the bottom of the
newsletter for the complete list of upcoming summer
alumni receptions. Arizona Law may be headed to your
neighborhood
soon. |

Dean of Students Willie Jordan-Curtis (l)
and Professor Barbara Bergman (r) at the Alumni
Reception in Coronado,
CA. | In April, in the
Letter of the Law, Dean Miller introduced Professor Barbara Bergman to the
Arizona Law community as the new director of its Advocacy Program. She
assumed her new position as of July 1 and is quickly
settling in.
This Monday, in Coronado, California, Arizona Law
alumni attending the annual CLE by the Sea conference
had the opportunity to welcome Professor Bergman in
person at our alumni reception.
Barbara joins Arizona Law from the University of
New Mexico School of Law, where she served on the
faculty for 28 years, including four years as associate
dean for academic affairs and one year as interim
dean.
A noted defense attorney who previously served with
the Public Defender Service in Washington, D.C., Barbara
also spent a year as associate counsel to President
Jimmy Carter. She was also on the defense team in
The State of Oklahoma v. Terry Nichols, a state
death penalty case following the bombing of the Alfred
P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City.
Barbara's extensive experience, national reputation
in advocacy, leadership in and deep connection with the
bar, and enthusiasm for teaching will continue the
evolution of Arizona Law's respected advocacy
program.
You can read the full announcement about Barbara's
hiring, and learn more about the future of the Advocacy
Program, here.
Please join us in giving Barbara a hearty welcome
-- just as we did in Coronado this
week. |
We
were joined by over
30 alumni, friends,
and family members at Arizona Law's CLE by the Sea
alumni reception on Monday
afternoon.
In
addition to Professor Bergman, this year's attendees
included Dean Willie Jordan-Curtis, Bar
President John Phelps, Judge Jim Marlar, and CLE by the
Sea stars Dev Sethi, Ted Schmidt, and Kevin
Boyle.
The reception was held at the scenic patio at
McP's on Orange Avenue. A huge thank you to alumnus
Michael Trauscht ('73, at right in blue and white
shirt) for helping us select a location and for
hosting Arizona Law.
Here are just a few of the great moments we had
catching up. As you can see, we also had a strong
contingent of future Wildcats present -- a special thank
you Matt and Maggie Schmidt for bringing our youngest
recruits!
