Soll Criminal Justice Lecture with Emily Bazelon

Greetings,

We are thrilled to announce that alumnus J. Michael Hennigan (’66 and 70), a 50-year veteran of the trial bar, will be joining us on April 14 to give this years Peter Chase Neumann Lecture on Civil Justice.

A double Wildcat, Mike has long been a valued member of our community and regularly takes the time to use his extensive experience as a litigator and trial specialist to enrich our collective understanding.

Every alumnus can give back to the University of Arizona community.

The UA’s Wildcat Mentor Society is now accepting applications for mentors and mentees for the 2022–23 year. The Wildcat Mentor Society pairs alumni with significant professional experience with a group of up to five current UA students for monthly group meetings. See more information below.

Whether you are an alumnus or a current student, we hope you’ll consider this chance to contribute to our collective experience and build your network.

Until the footnotes,

Marc

Trial Attorney and Alumnus J. Michael Hennigan to Speak at Neumann Civil Justice Lecture

Hennigan 2017.jpg

Please join us next week for the annual Peter Chase Neumann Lecture on Civil Justice, featuring attorney J. Michael Hennigan.

As lead counsel in more than 45 major jury trials in state and federal courts, and lead trial counsel for plaintiffs, Mike has litigated judgments and settlements of more than $8 billion for his clients. In 2017, University of Arizona Law awarded Mike a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding career. He is a proud double Wildcat (66 and 70) and can always be found in a bowtie, which pays honor to his Dean, the late Charles Ares (’52).

Attend in person or by livestream Thursday, April 14 at 12:15 p.m. Arizona time (MST) to learn about Mike Hennigans experiences in the courtroom and what he learned from them.

Mike is a founding principal of McKool Smith Hennigan and lives in Los Angeles with his wife Phyllis. In more than four decades of practicing law, he has established himself as a leader in the litigation of nationwide consumer class actions and commercial fraud cases.

Mike has been making an impact on the University of Arizona Law community ever since his days as a student, when he served on the Arizona Law Review and earned recognition from the faculty as the Ralph Aigler Outstanding Student of the Class of 1970.

A consummate public servant, Mike regularly shares his expertise and wisdom at seminars on class action litigation and other aspects of group representation within our civil justice system.

Mike is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has been consistently identified in prominent legal publications as one of the country’s top trial lawyers, including Chambers USA, Chambers Global, Who’s Who in American Law, and The Best Lawyers in America. Chambers USA ranks him among the top litigators in California and the country, describing him as a “classic trial lawyer” who is able to “see very well which elements will resonate and use the arguments to good effect.”

Everyone in our community, from students earning their BA or MLS degrees, JD students working through their 1L civil procedure class, to experienced trial counsel, is sure to benefit from hearing this years Neumann Lecture.

The University of Arizona’s Wildcat Mentor Society is looking for new alumni mentors to join our 202223 program. This is an extraordinary opportunity to give back and connect with recent alumni and current students.

Students from around the University and alumni are paired according to career goals and interests. After an online training session over the summer, mentors will begin meeting with a group of up to five mentees in the fall.

The groups will meet monthly by phone or video throughout the school year. Participants also are able to join networking and professional development events, culminating in an end-of-year celebration.

A number of law school alumni have generously offered their time and expertise as mentors, including Patty Stevens (91), Habib Pierce-Byrd (02), and 2020 and 2021 Mentor of the Year Don Powell (BA 69, JD 72).

We have so many extraordinary alumni who have made a difference in their communities and in our profession. A good number of graduates have made their professional name in the courtroom – and long-time observers can name those alumni advocates in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Washington State, Nevada, and around the country.

Trial advocacy continues to be a special strength of our College – one of many reasons we are focused, now, in overhauling our law school courtrooms and enhancing student and faculty support with the New Day in Court initiative.

Among those many exceptional litigators, Mike Hennigan has a special place. He was an extraordinary student, and even then made choices that anchored his name firmly to our College. He has been a model for students, a mentor to a handful of especially fortunate graduates, and a generous supporter. Mike and his wife Phyllis have been good friends and advisors to me, and in addition to visits back to Tucson, they have always made time when we visited our robust alumni community in Los Angeles.

I look forward to the special opportunity to hear the Neumann Civil Justice Lecture on April 14, just over a week from now.

Warmly,
