UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA
JAMES E. ROGERS COLLEGE OF LAW |
April 27, 2022 | | |
Greetings,
This week, we recognize a few of the law school’s outstanding scholars.
First-year student Taylor Macy is the first-ever recipient of the Professor Robert Glennon Endowed Scholarship. This new scholarship was generously created by Robert Glennon, Regents Professor Emeritus and Morris K. Udall Professor of Law & Public Policy, and his wife Hon. Karen Adam (’76), Superior Court Judge (Ret.), to help a student attend the college of law. Several of you – Robert and Karen’s friends, colleagues, and students – have contributed to the scholarship, for which we are grateful.
Two of our many outstanding faculty members also have been acknowledged recently for their contributions in their fields. Sergio Puig has been named to the board of the American Journal of International Law, and Tammi Walker joins only 21 other professors throughout the University among the 2022 faculty award recipients.
In the weeks leading up to graduation, we look forward to saluting more of the students and faculty who help give Arizona Law not only its intellectual rigor, but also its character.

Meet Taylor Macy, Inaugural Glennon Scholar
Taylor Macy had never considered law school. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Plant Biology, she pursued roles focused on community building and environmental issues.
It wasn’t until she took a position at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that she learned more about the law’s influence on land use regulations, a series of rules governing land development that can have a significant impact on air and water quality as well as public health.
“During a lot of those conversations, I saw how the law was one of the more effective ways to create change and to give power back to the community. That’s when I started looking into law school,” explains Taylor.
Taylor is now on the verge of finishing her first year at University of Arizona Law, where her passion for environmental advocacy continues to inform her professional goals. Among the other firsts she has experienced this year, Taylor was also the first to be awarded the Professor Robert Glennon Endowed Scholarship, named for Robert Glennon, Regents Professor Emeritus and Morris K. Udall Professor of Law & Public Policy. The scholarship was created by Glennon and his wife Hon. Karen Adam (’76), Superior Court Judge (Ret.), as a final act of service before Robert retired in 2021 after 36 years at Arizona.
“Karen and I created this scholarship to help a prospective student choose to become a lawyer and to attend University of Arizona Law,” says Robert. “University of Arizona Law occupies a very unusual position in American legal education. It’s a small school that has the benefits of students who are bright, curious, friendly, and diverse; of faculty who are top scholars, gifted teachers, accessible and collegial; of a university that is world class; and of supportive legal and court communities that welcome law students.”

Prof. Sergio Puig Elected to Board of Editors for Leading International Law Journal
Sergio Puig, University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law professor and director of the International Trade & Business Law program, has been elected to the board of editors for the American Journal of International Law. His four-year term of service will begin this month.
The Journal, which has published on a quarterly basis since 1907, features articles, essays and book reviews by preeminent scholars and practitioners from around the world addressing developments in public and private international law and foreign relations law.
Sergio will join a long list of influential board members including former University of Arizona Law colleague Professor James Anaya, who co-chaired the Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy program.
“I’m incredibly honored to have been elected to this position and look forward to working together with this outstanding group of international law scholars,” said Sergio. “This is the collective achievement of our excellent intellectual community here at University of Arizona Law.”
A leading figure in the field of international law, Sergio’s scholarship and teaching focuses on international economic law, network analysis and the law, international courts and tribunals and international indigenous rights and law. In the latest edition of the Sisk et. al study of scholarly impact, he was listed among the top-10 most cited faculty members from University of Arizona Law.

The University of Arizona recently announced its 2022 faculty awardees, including Associate Professor of Law and Psychology Tammi Walker. Tammi received the Early Career Scholars Award.
The Early Career Scholars Award recognizes outstanding early career faculty who are at the forefront of their disciplines and make highly valued contributions to the university’s teaching, creative activity, and service priorities.
Tammi joins 21 other faculty members recognized with faculty awards this year for their outstanding contributions to the University of Arizona. These awards are the highest faculty honors that our University bestows.
“I cannot fully express my appreciation for having been chosen to receive this award in a few words,” Tammi said. “It means so much, but the most significant honor must go to my colleagues who have supported my scholarship and me over the past few years.”

Last Friday, on a delightful, warm late afternoon, we held our annual community scholarship celebration that links student scholarship recipients and the donors who make the scholarships possible. The event was thoughtfully hosted by alumnus Dev Sethi (’97). There is little as powerful as hearing from students whose paths were changed by the support of alumni and friends, as well as from those alumni and friends.
One new scholarship this year with deep roots in Arizona Law include the Robert Glennon Endowed Scholarship we describe above, and the first recipient, Taylor Macy. Another new scholarship that had great meaning for many in our community was named in honor of alumnus Brian J. Pollock (’98), who passed away in 2020 from ALS. His wife, Jennie (’98), herself a distinguished alumna, welcomed the first Pollock Scholar, 1L Benjamin Como.
These are among the many days when we are powerfully reminded of the value of what we do – as lawyers and teachers – and the impact of the lives of our graduates, and by the force of love and imagination, of the impact to come from the future lawyers in the room.
