Homecoming

Greetings,

This week, we share photos and moments from orientation, which took place last week. We are in the first week of classes for our JD program, with the rest of our students, and students across the UA campus, starting classes next week.

I hope you will join me in welcoming all of our new students in Tucson and around the world to the Arizona Law family.

Until the footnotes,

Marc

New Student Orientation Highlights

The 2023-24 academic year got off to a great start last week, beginning with Global Programs Orientation on Monday, August 7. During the All-Student Orientation August 8 through 11, new students met their classmates as well as returning students, faculty, staff and administration.

On Tuesday morning, Assistant Registrar Lisa Queen (’13) helped set the stage for what it means to study the law in our Arizona Law community, along with a panel of current students including Lela Garcia (2L), Matt Lubisich (2L) and Niki Saenz (2L).

Sessions on Wednesday included “Thinking Critically About the Law and Legal Practice” with Professor of Practice Akilah Kinnison (JD ’12, LLM ’13) (pictured below).

Throughout the week, new students heard from key members of the administration and faculty, in both formal and informal settings, about all aspects of academics and life as a law student.

On Thursday, students participated in a legal writing workshop with their small sections. The day ended with the Student Organizations and Resources Fair & Ice Cream Social.

Judge Raner Collins (’75), Senior United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Arizona, gave the Justice Thomas A. Zlaket Orientation on Professionalism and administered an oath. Students then met in small groups led by nearly 30 attorneys to discuss professionalism scenarios they may encounter in law school and in their careers.

Thank you to Judge Collins and all the volunteers who gave their time for the incoming class. The full list of volunteers is below.

Orientation week ended Friday at the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, where members of the incoming class packaged food boxes for seniors in need. The group packaged 1,001 boxes – over 30,000 pounds of food!

Throughout orientation, it was easy to feel the excitement of the new students to be on campus and starting their law school journeys.

Thank You, Orientation Volunteers!

The success of orientation this year relied on the participation of a wonderful group of volunteers from our alumni and professional community. We extend our thanks to:

AROUND THE COLLEGE

Get to Know 2023-24 SBA President Kyran Brown, Class of 2024

The new academic year also brings new leaders to student organizations. We are pleased to introduce Kyran Brown, the incoming president of the Student Bar Association. Excerpts from a Q&A with Kyran are below. See the whole story here.

Name: Kyran Brown

Hometown: Page, Arizona

Undergraduate degree and institution: Brigham Young University (Provo, Utah), B.A. in Latin American Studies, Minors: History, Spanish, Portuguese, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

What first inspired you to pursue a law degree?

As an undergraduate, I had the great opportunity to intern with an immigration attorney for two summers. She started Alvarado Tsosie Law, PLLC, but her dedication and poise to keep families together through immigration, criminal and family law showed the marvels of what one attorney could accomplish in the judicial system.

Why did you choose University of Arizona Law?

As an Arizona native who wanted to develop a career in Arizona, attending the University of Arizona Law was a goal. I chose it because of its smaller, but more tight-knit, community. Tucson, in addition to its proximity to Phoenix, a federal border, and indigenous lands, on which the University of Arizona sits, made it a desirable area to start a legal career.

What three words come to mind when you think of Arizona Law?

Amicable. Innovative. Connected.

What are your goals as SBA president?

As SBA President, I encourage the law school community to share their talents and strengths by attending major SBA events and joining a student organization.

Advice for incoming 1Ls?

Embrace your identity. Broaden your horizons. Seek to understand and learn from one another. Engage in meaningful conversations that challenge assumptions. Together, create a future that embraces equity, justice and understanding for all.

Save the Dates: Homecoming and Law Alumni Weekend!

Save the date for University of Arizona Law’s Homecoming festivities including the Lifetime Achievement Awards and our annual Red & Blue BBQ.

This academic year, for the first time, we will move class reunions from homecoming and celebrate them instead at a brand new event we are calling Law Alumni Weekend. Details are below:

HOMECOMING WEEKEND 2023: November 3–4

LAW ALUMNI WEEKEND 2024: April 5–6

Starting in the spring of 2024, the college will invite all alumni back to campus for a weekend of fun and celebration, giving LawCats two chances to connect each year. Reunions will take place during Alumni Weekend. Alumni who graduated in a year ending in 3, 4, 8 and 9 will celebrate their reunion at our inaugural event in April 2024.

Visit law.arizona.edu/homecoming to stay up to date on the details, to contact the Alumni & Development Office with questions, or to get involved.

We have launched! Another graduate law class has arrived, and, as the notes and pictures above suggest, they are not only highly capable – one of the most capable classes in the history of our College – but diverse, focused, and, from the start, highly engaged. I can’t wait to get to know members of this class – and for the many opportunities to introduce them to all of our committed alumni and friends on the bench and in the bar.

The success of our students turns not only on their hard efforts, but also on the steady support and participation of our broader legal community. That is part of what makes Arizona great and was seen in the participation by 30 judges and lawyers in the the Justice Thomas A. Zlaket Orientation on Professionalism during Orientation.

Warmly,
