Homecoming

Greetings,

This week’s feature is about students helping students.

Founded in 2017 by members of the Class of 2018, the Justice Advocates Coalition funds fellowships for students working in public interest summer positions. Three new endowments are now enabling more students to gain valuable legal experience and bridge legal services gaps without financial hardship.

The Justice Advocates Coalition is powerful proof of the ability of the current generation of University of Arizona Law students to empower one another and bring their gifts to help solve the deep challenge of expanding access to justice.

Until the footnotes,

Marc

New Endowments Established to Expand Work of Justice Advocates Coalition

Three endowed fellowships have been created to support students in their summer public interest endeavors as part of the Justice Advocates Coalition (“JAC”) at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law.

The creation of these endowments marks a significant milestone for JAC, providing a stable and consistent source of funding year-after-year to assist students in pursuing unpaid summer positions without financial constraints.

JAC, founded in 2017 as a student-led initiative, is committed to empowering marginalized communities and nurturing law students interested in public interest law careers. Since its inception, JAC has sponsored 49 fellowships, valued at an impressive $140,750, with fellows working at esteemed organizations such as the ACLU, EarthJustice, Southern Arizona Legal Aid, and Lambda Legal Education and Defense Fund.

Two of the new endowments proudly commemorate specific aspects of JAC’s history. The Hegland, Silverman, Bennett, and Marcus JAC Public Interest Fellowship pays tribute to professors Paul Bennett, Kenney Hegland, Paul Marcus and Andy Silverman (’69), who played pivotal roles in the success of the Public Interest Law Organization (“PILO”), JAC’s precursor. Known as the “pillars” of public interest practice at University of Arizona Law, these faculty members diligently promoted awareness of the student-created organization and collaborated with donors to secure crucial funding. Bailey Martin, 3L, was named the inaugural Hegland, Silverman, Bennett, Marcus Fellow in summer 2023.

The Hammersley, Rutherford, and Zwart JAC Public Interest Fellowship was named after Mia Hammersley, Amanda Rutherford and Wouter Zwart, all graduates of the University of Arizona Law Class of 2018, who spearheaded the establishment of JAC in 2017. Second-year law student Konya Saidu was granted the inaugural Hammersley, Rutherford, Zwart Fellowship in summer 2023.

The third JAC fellowship endowment was made possible by a generous gift of $100,000 in the summer of 2023. This fellowship serves as a heartfelt tribute to the Agnese Nelms Haury Program in Environment and Social Justice, an influential philanthropic organization founded at the University of Arizona in 2014 that holds special significance for JAC. In fact, it was the Haury Program that bestowed the inaugural grant to Hammersley, Rutherford and Zwart during the coalition’s formative stages, fortifying their vision and efforts.

To contribute to JAC’s mission and be part of this transformative initiative, contact Megan O’Leary, who can provide further information on how to support and uplift the next generation of justice advocates.

AROUND THE COLLEGE

Priya Sundareshan Recognized as Rising Environmental Leader

During the National Conference of Environmental Legislators National Forum in August, Priya Sundareshan (’11), Arizona State Senator and director of the University of Arizona Law Natural Resource Use and Management Clinic, was honored with the organization’s Rising Environmental Leader Award.

In her first year as a state legislator, Priya already has become the Ranking Member on the Senate Natural Resources, Energy, and Water Committee. She also serves on the Assured Water Supply Committee of the Governor’s Water Policy Council and the board of the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority (“WIFA”). The Council was established by executive order in January 2023 to modernize the Arizona Groundwater Management Act. Priya is one of four legislators who serve on the Council, along with tribal representatives and members appointed by the governor. WIFA is an independent state authority that finances construction, rehabilitation, acquisition and improvement of the state’s water infrastructure.

With water and other environmental issues taking a prominent place at the national and state levels, we are proud of Priya’s leadership, not only as a state senator, but also on campus with clinic students working for collaborative solutions to natural resource challenges.

Free Legal Paraprofessional Ethics CLE Oct. 19

The Legal Paraprofessional Program is happy to offer a free, virtual lunch hour CLE to members of our legal community and our students on October 19 at noon.

The state of Arizona is now offering a license for Legal Paraprofessionals to provide limited legal services in specified practice areas. Taught by ethics expert Professor Keith Swisher, this session will focus on frequently asked questions regarding legal ethics that affect all legal service providers, but with a special focus on LPs and attorneys wondering how licensed LPs can enhance their practices.

If you have a general question about ethics, please submit it when registering for the event, and if possible, it will be incorporated into the presentation.

This may qualify for up to one hour of MCLE ethics credit.

The Justice Advocates Coalition builds on a long Arizona Law tradition of commitment to practice in the public interest, and more broadly to public service. This generational effort created a powerful vision that has resonated within and beyond the law school walls.

We are on a path whose next goal is to help create sufficient endowed funds to support the summer work of all law students who take unpaid public interest positions, and to expand that to support students who work in unpaid government positions. A particular puzzle for positions both in the summer and during semesters in residence is the cost of housing in Phoenix – or for others in DC or LA or other cities.

Many of you have helped this effort over the past five years. We welcome all the help that moves us forward. Thank you.

Warmly,
