Greetings,
Join me this week in welcoming our new Research Scholar, Mohammad Hamed Isar!
Hamed comes to us from Afghanistan, where he was Dean of Jawzjan University Law School, with the help of a national network who helped Afghan legal scholars find positions in the U.S. following the Taliban takeover in 2021.
You will also want to have your calendar open as you read this week’s newsletter, as we share details on upcoming events on campus and remotely throughout the fall. We look forward to seeing you during these events.

Dean Mohammad Hamed Isar Joins University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law as a Research Scholar | |
Dean Mohammad Hamed Isar has joined the University of Arizona Law James E. Rogers College of Law as a Research Scholar for the 2023-24 academic year.
Prior to his arrival, Hamed was Dean of the Law School at Jawzjan University in the northern region of Afghanistan near Mazar-i-Sharif. His teaching, practice and research interests focus on criminal law (general criminal law and international criminal law) and comparative constitutional law, and his work has been published in reputable Afghan and U.S. international law journals.
Hamed learned about the opportunity to work at University of Arizona Law shortly after the collapse of the Afghan government and subsequent Taliban takeover in 2021. He, along with his wife and small children, traveled to Pakistan to await permission from the Embassy to travel to the United States, but were faced with an extensive process during a dangerous and uncertain time.
In the fall of 2021 several University of Arizona Law faculty members, which included Andrew Coan, Christopher Griffin, Toni Massaro and Eunice Lee, joined with a national network working to help Afghan legal scholars find employment at universities throughout the United States. The dean’s office and faculty members worked alongside the University of Arizona Law Alumni and Development office to raise funds to establish the Research Scholar position.
“I was in an uncertain situation with my family, but I had hope during that time. Professor Andrew Coan and other faculty members at the University of Arizona helped us so much,” said Hamed. “I am thankful to all the people who were involved in helping me and my family get here.”

The Legal Paraprofessional Program is happy to offer a free, virtual lunch hour CLE to members of our legal community and our students on October 19 at noon.
The state of Arizona is now offering a license for Legal Paraprofessionals to provide limited legal services in specified practice areas. Taught by ethics expert Professor Keith Swisher, this session will focus on frequently asked questions regarding legal ethics that affect all legal service providers, but with a special focus on LPs and attorneys wondering how licensed LPs can enhance their practices.
If you have a general question about ethics, please submit it when registering for the event, and if possible, it will be incorporated into the presentation.
This may qualify for up to one hour of MCLE ethics credit. This program is open to all, not LPs only.

The path for Dean Isar to come to Tucson with his family was long and perilous. Thanks to Andy Coan, Chris Griffin, Eunice Lee and Toni Massaro for the leadership and community-building that made Dean Isar’s visit possible.
Now Dean Isar has time for his important scholarship, and members of the Arizona Law community all have the opportunity to get to know and learn about places and legal systems far removed from our daily experience.
