 Homecoming

Greetings,

Most JD students come to Arizona Law to be trained, pass the bar, and practice in a wide variety of settings.

Because we admit a strong, deep, diverse class, and because our faculty and staff are committed to providing a top quality legal education, we have long had strong employment outcomes. Indeed, the employment statistics for our Class of 2021 are the highest in school history!

After the relative quiet of the summer, the Arizona Law community is back in full swing. This week’s newsletter includes a number of ways to connect with students and alumni.

Alumni hiring, mentoring and supporting our students and recent grads in many other ways result in tangible and intangible benefits. We thank you for your role in creating the strong alumni connections that are crucial to the future success of our students!

Until the footnotes,

Marc

University of Arizona Law 2021 Graduates Set New School Milestone for Employment

Graduates from the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law class of 2021 have set the highest employment rates in school history.

At graduation, 77 percent of the class of 2021 were employed in full-time, long-term jobs that either require a law license or for which having a JD offers an advantage, 15 percentage points higher than the class of 2020.

An additional school milestone was set ten months after graduation with 88.1 percent of graduates employed in long-term jobs that required bar passage or JD-advantage positions, an increase from the previous year and five percent higher than the national average. In addition, four JD graduates, 3.2 percent of the class, were seeking further advanced degrees. Only 5.6 percent (seven graduates) remained unemployed and were seeking employment ten months after graduation.

The percentage of students who entered private practice represented almost half of the graduating class with 43.4 percent of graduates securing such positions. Judicial clerkships remained notably high with 27.4 percent of graduates entering this field, compared to 9.6 percent nationally. Graduates entering the work field in public interest positions other than judicial clerkships were on par with the national average with 8 percent, compared to 7.7 percent nationally.

“One difference in the Class of 2021 employment outcomes is that we saw more students secure employment sooner than in previous years,” said Career Development Office (CDO) Senior Director Shannon Walker

AROUND THE COLLEGE

Wildcat Mentor Society Registration Closes Friday

The University of Arizona’s Wildcat Mentor Society is looking for new alumni mentors to join our 2022–23 program. The last day to apply to be a mentor is this Friday, September 2.

Students from around the University and alumni are paired according to career goals and interests. Mentors will meet remotely with a group of up to five mentees monthly throughout the school year, on a schedule determined by the mentor and mentees. Participants also are able to join networking and professional development events, culminating in an end-of-year celebration.

A number of law school alumni already have registered to mentor this fall, including Patty Stevens (’91), Habib Pierce-Byrd (’02), and Don Powell (BA ’69, JD ’72).

Law School Hosts High School Law Camp

This summer, University of Arizona Law hosted approximately 40 high schoolers from around the state for a two-day Law Camp July 26 and 27. Students from out of state also attended online.

The free event organized by BA in Law faculty and staff included speakers from Pima County Public Defender’s Office, Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Teen Court, The Florence Immigration Project, and the Arizona Superior Court, as well as Arizona Law faculty, students and library staff. Students participated in workshops and activities including a mock trial, a tour of the Superior Court, client interviewing, law school class simulation, and more.

“After attending this camp I am definitely more interested in going to law school because I think I understand the concepts fairly well and I will be able to fit in with the others who think as carefully as I do,” said one participant. “The classes given at this camp made me think critically and I loved how I felt while my brain was trying to piece together solutions.”

LawCats Live to Discuss Legal Paraprofessional Program

IN THE NEWS

The future of America’s water cannot be won without changing America’s farms

The legal market for new graduates has been strong for the past few years – stronger than originally many feared at the start of the COVID pandemic.

But focusing on the shifts in general demand miss the more important and specific point: we admit great students; they work hard – as do we – through law school; and any employer, private or public, large or small, should be interested in an Arizona Law student or graduate. It is heartening to see the market … bear down … and recognize our exceptional early career lawyers.

Warmly,
