Greetings,
As the
University of Arizona, and as Arizona's first law
school, our commitment extends to all corners of the
state, and, indeed, across the planet.
This
week we share the work of our Phoenix Recent Graduate
Committee, highlight one of our exceptional students,
and share a quick update on our Giving Tuesday campaign
as well as other ongoing efforts to fund the Huerta
Scholars.
Until
the footnotes,

Committee |

Anne
Nelson |
The Phoenix Recent Grad
Committee helps us fly the Arizona Law banner in Phoenix
by serving as a direct resource for new graduates. The
Committee serves as a built-in resource for our newly
minted professionals in the Phoenix area. Anne Nelson
serves as chair for the Phoenix Recent Grad Committee
and is an associate at Fennemore Craig.
Anne
came to Arizona Law in 2007 during a time of great
change for the legal profession. She decided to study
law after a few years at the Vanguard Group, and tax law was right
up her alley.
"During
my time at Vanguard, I really enjoyed learning about the
various regulations and tax laws that affected my
clients and their investment strategies. It sparked
an interest in learning more about the law and helping
people navigate the various intricacies of the Internal
Revenue Code."
In law
school, she served as an Ares Fellow for Associate Dean Brent White and an
articles editor for the Arizona Law Review --
publishing two student notes in the review (From Muddled to Medellin: A Legal History
of Sole Executive Agreements and Fifty-Eight Years and Counting: The Elusive
Quest to Reform Arizona's Justice of the Peace
Courts).
Anne
also clerked for the Arizona Corporation
Commission and the Federal Aviation
Administration Chief Counsel's Office in Washington,
DC.

After
graduating, Anne earned a spot in the prestigious US Department of Justice Honors Program
and worked as a trial attorney in the Department of
Justice Tax Division in DC for four years. During
that time, she litigated civil tax cases in federal
district and bankruptcy courts across the West
Coast.
Now at
Fennemore Craig in Phoenix, Anne's practice focuses on
commercial litigation and tax controversy.
Out of
the office, Anne is an avid Vespa rider and enthusiast
-- she even rode to graduation on her Vespa wearing
her cap and gown.

you like to help work with new grads and plan
gatherings? Anne is seeking people to join the committee

Jessica
Schulberg |
Deep in the heart of Phoenix and
at the forefront of Arizona governance, Jessica
Schulberg will soon be participating in the Spring
Legislative Program in the Arizona House of
Representatives.
Jessica
is a native New Yorker. She graduated from Barnard
College/Columbia University in 2004 with a major in
American Studies. She went to work in marketing for a
Hearst subsidiary for three years in New York City, and
then as the Development and Communications Associate at
Global Kids,
Inc., a nonprofit organization that teaches
underprivileged students about foreign policy in New
York and Washington, DC.
In 2009,
she moved to London where she completed a Master's
degree in International Political Economy from the London School of Economics and Political
Science. She earned her degree with merit and tied
for first to win the Susan Strange Award for the Best
Dissertation in International Political
Economy.
Currently
in her second year at Arizona Law, Jessica is the
articles manager of the Arizona Law Review and
an active member of the Jewish Law Students Association.
She is also a Dean's Scholar, a Senior Writing Fellow,
the 2014 AWLA Judge Mary Anne Richey
Scholarship recipient, and the second place winner
in the 2014 Richard Grand Legal Writing Competition.

Jessica and
Walter |
This
past summer, she worked as a summer associate at Boies, Schiller & Flexner, LLP in
the firm's Washington, DC, office. This fall she was a
clerk at the US Department of Justice's Executive Office of
Immigration Review. This spring, in addition to
participating in the Spring Legislative Program, she
will be clerking at the US
Attorney's Office in Tucson. And if you are not yet
convinced of her gumption, in the summer of 2015, she
will be an extern for Judge Jennifer Guerin Zipps (BA
'86) at the US District Court in Tucson.
Given
all of these experiences, I asked Jessica about her long
term practice goal. She had no hesitation in her
response, "I want to be a federal prosecutor for the
United States Attorney's Office."
Jessica
feels connected to Tucson, especially the climate. You
can find her out hiking, running, or playing
tennis. And when she isn't doing that, she is
spending time with her feisty Shih-Tzu/Poodle mix,
Walter.

Thank
you to everyone who has contributed thus far to our
#GivingTuesday campaign. The day was a terrific success
with 28 individual donors contributing. We owe a special
note of appreciation to two key people who helped to
make our #GivingTuesday efforts a success: Marian
Salzman and Robyn Interpreter.
On
#GivingTuesday, December 2nd, alumna Robyn Interpreter represented the
College on a Phoenix newscast raising awareness about
Giving Tuesday and the College of Law's Huerta Scholar's
program. Robyn is a
2000 alumna of the College and the IPLP program. She is
a founding partner in the law firm of Montgomery &
Interpreter, PLC, in
Scottsdale representing Indian tribes and allottees on a
variety of issues, including resources development,
estate planning, and real estate
transactions.
Marian Salzman is a friend of the
College. She is CEO of Havas
PR and partner to alumnus and teaching fellow
Jim Diamond. Marian donated several
hours of her time and her company's resources to help us
think through the #GivingTuesday campaign. She was the
creative inspiration behind our messages and made the
key connection that led to Professor Rob William's invitation to
the #GivingTuesday White House Planning Event.
Robyn
and Marian thank you.
If you
have not yet participated in #GivingTuesday, it is not
too late. The #GivingTuesday effort extends through the
end of December. Please, join in to support the Huerta
Scholars Program and help Native students blaze a path
to the College of Law.
