Greetings,

This week, we feature – and thank – Gammage & Burnham for two recent gifts to our law school. Both gifts have already had an impact, with long-time Tucson resident and 1L Zalen Isaacson being the inaugural recipient of the Gammage & Burnham Endowed Scholarship, and with the gift to A New Day in Court helping bring us across the line to groundbreaking.

Gammage & Burnham Makes Two Contributions at UArizona Law, to Support A New Day in Court and Establish Endowed Scholarship

Arizona law firm Gammage & Burnham and members of the firm have made contributions to the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law in support of the “A New Day in Court” initiative, as well as the creation of a new endowed scholarship, providing financial assistance to students pursuing their legal education.

The first gift of $50,000 supports A New Day In Court, the college’s largest capital project in over a decade. A New Day in Court will update University of Arizona Law’s current courtrooms that were originally built in the late 1970s, creating fully functional, state-of-the-art spaces that give students proper courtroom settings in which to learn and practice. The college’s advocacy program will also be renamed the Thomas Mauet Advocacy Program, in honor of Arizona Law Professor Emeritus and renowned trial expert Thomas Mauet

When construction is completed, speakers will present from the Gammage & Burnham podium, an upgraded space in one of the college’s two new courtrooms.

Groundbreaking for the project is set to begin on January 2, 2024.

The second gift from Gammage & Burnham and its members establishes the Gammage & Burnham Endowed Scholarship. This fund provides financial aid to deserving JD students at the College of Law alleviating the financial burden associated with pursuing a legal education.

The inaugural scholarship recipient, awarded to full-time JD students with an interest in practicing law in Arizona after graduation, is first-year law student Zalen Isaacson.

“I am greatly honored to be the recipient of the Gammage & Burnham scholarship,” said Zalen. “I grew up in Tucson, and I have always wanted to build my career in Arizona. Receiving this scholarship from a law firm with such strong roots in the state has given me a great start.”

Speaking on behalf of Gammage & Burnham, double Wildcat Mike King (BA ’75, JD ’79) expressed the firm’s commitment to advancing legal education and supporting the development of future legal professionals. “We are delighted to partner with University of Arizona Law to provide students with the tools they need to succeed in the legal field. These contributions reflect our dedication to fostering the growth of the legal community and ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder the pursuit of legal education.”

Students Respond: What is Legal Research?

This week, we share a post by Assistant Librarian and Professor of Legal Research Marcelo Rodríguez from the Daniel F. Cracchiolo Law Library Blog. Marcelo’s post shows the creative way he and the rest of the Legal Research, Analysis and Communication team engage with students and challenge assumptions about law school and practice:

“Every year, I ask the 1L students taking my Legal Research classes embedded within the Legal Research, Analysis and Communication (LRAC) to answer the question, What is Legal Research? The exercise is designed to help me have a better understanding of where the students are coming from, what expectations they might have and any connections they may have with research and how it relates to legal writing and the law in general. I usually bring poster boards and lots of colorful markers to class and let students use their imagination and draw whatever comes to mind when they think about legal research.

“After several Legal Research classes on topics such as legal research platforms, legal information structure, taxonomies, research strategies, secondary/primary sources, keywords searching, statutory research, case finding methods, citators, AI and more, they get do the exercise all over again. In the same groups as the first time when I met them, they get to draw on new poster boards their answers to the question, What is Legal Research?, this time, taking into account all the information and skills they have learned.

“I always display in front of my office their creations to show everyone how proud I am of their work and how far they’ve come. I also joke with them about saving these for when they become famous in the legal community and beyond. At that point, I will show them these and tell the news that I used to know them back when they were still learning the basics of legal research.”

Prof. Sklar Appears on Good Morning America

You may have seen a familiar face while sipping your coffee and watching the morning news recently. Faculty Director of the Health Law & Policy Program and Distinguished Public Service Scholar Tara Sklar appeared on ABC’s “Good Morning America” in a segment on insurance coverage for weight-loss drugs.

Tara discussed the importance of telehealth providers educating patients on issues with weight-loss medications, including side effects (appearing at around the 2:00 mark in the clip).

We sincerely appreciate the long and deep connection to Gammage & Burnham, to the Arizona alumni who championed both a firm and individual gifts, and to all members of the firm who believe in the importance of great Arizona firms and great Arizona law schools.

In support the University of Arizona, Gammage & Burnham and its members have kept the focus on supporting and training great lawyers. We see that perspective embodied in the careers our alumni have had at the firm.

We could not be more grateful to the many alumni and friends, and firms and foundations, who support the future of our law school ... as beautifully illuminated in the direct support for our students.

Warmly,
