Greetings,

Valentine’s Day is this week. While some embrace the holiday of heart-shaped chocolate boxes, roses and giant teddy bears, there are many others who prefer alternatives like Galentine’s and Palentine’s, or none of the above.

One thing we can all agree on is supporting Arizona Law students. From Thursday, February 13 at noon, to Friday, February 14 at noon, our annual Giving Day will raise funds for future LawCats. Join us in showing the love!

Onward!

FEATURE

This Week, Share the LawCat Love on Giving Day

Giving Day is less than 24 hours away!

This Valentine’s Day, University of Arizona Law is asking the LawCat community to show your Wildcat love by contributing during Giving Day, a 24-hour fundraising effort from noon on Thursday, February 13, to noon on Friday, February 14, in support of students and the university.

Your generosity ensures that University of Arizona Law is able to train the next generation of leaders and lawyers and allows us to provide a modern, nimble legal education of the highest quality. A legal education is a life-changing experience, and with your support, we can give our students the resources they need to transform their passions and skills into fulfilling careers.

This week, we’re highlighting one of the three programs supported through Giving Day 2025: the Law Dean’s Innovation Fund. This fund drives key initiatives that strengthen our JD program, support faculty and expand opportunities for students. It has played a pivotal role in shaping Arizona Law’s leadership in legal education—supporting hands-on advocacy training, expanding clinical offerings and enhancing experiential learning. Your support ensures we can continue pushing boundaries and preparing the next generation of lawyers for the challenges ahead.

See our Giving Day page to learn more about this and other programs supported through the generosity of Giving Day donors.

AROUND THE COLLEGE

Arizona Court of Appeals, Division 2 Will Hold Oral Arguments on Campus Feb. 25

As part of its ongoing public education effort, the Arizona Court of Appeals, Division 2 will visit campus on Tuesday, February 25

The court visit is hosted by the College of Law’s William H. Rehnquist Center on the Constitutional Structures of Government and will include oral arguments, open to the public. Seating is limited and available to those who have registered prior to the event. Register here.

The cases being argued are:

CASE 1: 1:30-2:20 p.m.

State of Arizona v. Christopher Wayne Cooker (2 CA-CR 2023-0168)

Summary: On appeal from his convictions and sentences for aggravated driving under the influence and aggravated assault, Christopher Cooker argues the trial court violated his constitutional rights to confrontation, to a twelve-person jury and to notice of the charges against him.

CASE 2: 2:30-3:20 p.m.

Jane Doe I & II; John Doe v. The Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, et al. (2 CA-CV 2023-0293)

Summary: On appeal from the trial court’s entry of summary judgment in favor of the Church defendants, the Does argue summary judgment was inappropriate because the presence of non-clergy individuals during confidential communications was behavior inconsistent with maintaining confidentiality, constituting waiver of the clergy-penitent privilege and, thus, requiring the Church defendants to report child abuse under A.R.S. § 13-3620(A).

A Pie in the Face...for a Good Cause

Simon Moazez winding up to pie Taylor Alexander

Last week, Director of Empirical & Policy Research Chris Griffin and Student Bar Association members volunteered to take one for the team during the SBA’s “Pie-a-Professor” event. The event raised funds for SBA initiatives in support of the student body throughout the year.
