From the
Arizona Law family, happy new year!
To the many of you who
so generously gave of your financial resources and your
time in 2015, the entire College of Law cannot thank you
enough.
The spring term will
be filled with events, week in and week out. And many
great lectures, conferences, and workshops take place
every week around the UA, with many of those being of
broad interest. We look forward to seeing you at some of
these great events.
Until the footnotes,
Marc

This spring brings with it
the promise of new challenges and shared learning --
ideas and conversations that we hope to share with you.
Major events at the
college this spring will include the
J. Byron McCormick Society for Law and
Public Affairs Lecture on February 15, with the
speaker to be announced soon. The
Civil Justice Initiative
Lecture (date yet to be announced) will
feature renowned California attorney

Faculty are planning significant
gatherings, including a
workshop on free speech organized
by Professor Jane Bambauer February

the public is invited to attend a panel discussion on
whether it is wise to have the protections we do for
commercial speech, corporate campaign donations, and
racist or offensive speech.
On April 22,
the
Global Mining Law Center
will host a
mining law conference at the college,
also open to the public.
The popular new lunchtime
Law.Change speaker series
will continue to further conversations about
cutting-edge legal practice. Past speakers in this
series have included Alex Lane ('99), Raval Pankaj
('09), and Brian Chase ('11). The series has so far
sparked regular participation by members of the bar.

And our semester would not be
complete without a number of visits from alumni
speakers. We are fortunate to have
"A Conversation With ..." visits,
geared toward our student audience, scheduled
with Burt Kinerk ('62), Jimmy Rogers ('72), and
George Rountree ('60). We also have "A Conversation

Reminder:
Opportunity to Help
Detained
Immigrant Survivors of Domestic Violence
We have updated information on
the pro bono opportunity organized by the UA Bacon
Immigration Law & Policy Program and the Florence
Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project. These two groups
are jointly launching an effort to ensure high-quality
representation for immigrant women detained in Arizona
with strong claims for asylum based on severe domestic
violence.
If you are looking
for a pro bono opportunity that will develop a diverse
set of legal skills, including brief-writing and oral
advocacy, give you the opportunity to work closely with
a survivor of domestic violence, gain expertise in
asylum law, and be a part of a social justice campaign,
please consider joining this effort.

Please take the time to join
the online alumni directory. We are trying
to create a shared resource to support our students and
our alumni. The directory is only valuable if alumni
participate. If you need your personalized invitation,
please contact us by email or
call (520) 621-8430.
We have three weekly drawing
winners to report from among new directory members:
Fred Reish
('69), Damon Boyd
('98), and
Kristina Jonek ('98). Congratulations
to all, and thanks for joining!

In this
Wildcat Wednesday -- Letter of the
Law, we have noted only a few of the talks and
events at the college this spring.
In addition to public
talks, conferences, and workshops, we have alumni and
other speakers joining our classes all the
time. Many of these opportunities to learn and
engage are not listed on the college calendar -- but
they are always available to you.
Whenever you visit the
college, if you have time, we'd like to have you back in
the middle of the exciting intellectual environment that
you continue to make a reality. Our door is always
open.
Warmly,
Dean & Ralph W. Bilby
