Greetings,

Today marks the beginning of the Spring 2023 semester. As students and professors return to campus here in Tucson, we recognize the extraordinary contribution that our Professors of Practice bring to the law school. This week we feature Jordan Malka, who brings his practice experience into the classroom throughout the semester.

As we look to the coming semester, we also share a number of opportunities for you to engage with the LawCat community, whether it is through learning from the many speakers we bring to campus or by interviewing and hiring our superb students for summer and full-time positions.

Until the footnotes,

Marc

Q&A with Professor of Practice Jordan Malka

We are grateful for what Professors of Practice at the University of Arizona Law bring to our classrooms. Many of these professors have full-time legal practices in addition to teaching, providing a valuable perspective for students.

Professor of Practice Jordan Malka works in the Trial Unit of the Federal Public Defender’s office in Tucson, where he represents indigent clients in federal court charged with federal offenses. In this conversation, he tells us about the “Crimmigration” class he teaches, his practice, and his experience with the LawCat community:

What interested you in teaching at University of Arizona Law?

The Tucson legal community proudly identifies with the law school. Immediately after moving to Tucson in 2017, I knew I had to have my UA Law experience.

Tell us about your class.

Crimmigration is the study of the immigration consequences that may follow from criminal activity. A secondary focus of the class is learning methods to effectively read and comprehend state and federal statutes.

What do you hope students will get out of your course?

Confidence and excitement to join our legal community.

Is there anything that surprised you about teaching at University of Arizona Law?

The law school does an excellent job recruiting students from across the country and world. It is a pleasure to share the classroom with such incredibly smart people.

Tell us about your work outside the law school. How do you think your professional experience helps your students?

I am an Assistant Federal Public Defender, and so my job is, well, interesting, to say the least. But, aside from the fascinating cases I manage and the courtroom experiences I have had, I hope students can see that being an effective advocate is within their reach.

With a busy career outside the classroom, what keeps bringing you back as a professor of practice?

The students, of course. It is a privilege to hold this mentorship position.

My thanks to Jordan Palka for his commitment to our students as a Professor of Practice. We hear from students in your class how much they enjoy and appreciate your teaching.

Like Jordan, all of our Professors of Practice significantly advance the breadth and depth of what we can offer our students. Their generosity, year after year, allows us to draw on an excellent bar and bench.
