McCormick Lecture with Paul Butler

Greetings,

This week’s issue comes as a rare Wildcat Thursday instead of Wednesday, with the shortened holiday week.

We proudly introduce the Linda Catlin and George Catlin Scholarship Endowment Fund. The planned gift, which will establish a scholarship endowment to support Native American law students, was born of a chance correspondence and resulting friendship between Linda Catlin and Professor Robert Williams. This story illustrates how our law school provides a forum for world-class thinkers and builds connections among a worldwide community.

Until the footnotes,

Marc

Investing in the Future: Linda Catlin Creates Scholarship Fund to Benefit Native American Students at UArizona Law

In December 2014, Linda Catlin switched on PBS. Onscreen, journalist Bill Moyers spoke to Robert A. Williams Jr., Regents Professor at the University of Arizona’s James E. Rogers College of Law.

The topic of the discussion was Williams’ most recent book, “Savage Anxieties: The Invention of Western Civilization,” a continuation of the professor’s longtime advocacy for Indigenous rights.

Catlin sent Williams an email, the beginning of a years-long correspondence that would blossom into both a friendship and a bequest to the James E. Rogers College of Law — a leading institution for training lawyers in Indigenous peoples law and policy featuring a mentorship and experiential-learning program established more than 20 years back.

This past fall, Catlin and the college finalized her planned gift, which will create the Linda Catlin and George Catlin Scholarship Endowment Fund, providing financial aid to Native American law students who, after graduation, intend to work as legal advocates for Native American communities.

AROUND THE COLLEGE

Welcome Back Breakfast

We were excited to see students back on campus last Wednesday, January 11 for the first day of spring semester classes! Before everyone got down to the business at hand, students enjoyed a breakfast and chance to catch up. Here are some photo highlights. Wishing all students a successful semester!

Lunchtime Learning Opportunities with the Phoenix Externship Program (PEP)

The University of Arizona Law Phoenix Externship Program (PEP) is back.

Last week, students were welcomed to the Phoenix legal community by former Wildcats Judge Daniel P. Collins (’83) and Justice Ann A. Scott Timmer (BA ’82).

Professor Ellen Bublick, Director of the Phoenix Externship Program, extends an invitation to alumni and friends to attend the popular lunchtime speaker series, held in conjunction with the externship program, at the Phoenix Bioscience Core. Certificates of attendance are offered for CLE purposes.

On Friday, January 20, the first luncheon will feature Gabriela Elizondo-Craig, Arizona Law i4j Fellow, and Erin Weaver, Arizona Law i4j Research Assistant, on the Medical Debt Policy Report Scorecard.

See the schedule and register here.

Richard Davis (’72) Inducted into University of Arizona Greek Hall of Fame

We were pleased to learn that Richard Davis (’72) is one of five University of Arizona alumni inducted into the 2023 class of the University’s Order of Omega Greek Hall of Fame.

As one of the Arizona Greek Community’s highest honors, the Order of Omega Greek Hall of Fame Award recognizes those fraternity/sorority alumni members whose exemplary life achievements have brought great honor and prestige.

Richard arrived in Tucson in 1963 as a United States Air Force member. In 1965, he enrolled as a student at the University of Arizona, on a football and track scholarship, and went on to receive his undergraduate degree and then his J.D. from the College of Law in 1972.

He formed the Black Student Union and served as its first president. In 1968, he chartered the Zeta Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Additionally, Richard established the New Start Summer Program, which aids high school students as they transition to academic careers at the university.

Following his graduation from the College of Law, Richard and a colleague started an annual scholarship program to provide a network of financial and moral support to African American high school students in Southern Arizona seeking continued education.

Richard is a shareholder in the Litigation Section at Mesch Clark Rothschild. His practice areas include healthcare and cases that involve product liability, condemnation matters and medical malpractice.

Gifts in support of our students – both current and planned gifts, like the generous gift from Linda Catlin that will support Native American law students who intend to work as legal advocates for Native American communities – have long been at the heart of philanthropy at Arizona Law. Important as our work in the scholarly and policy realms is, the foundation of our great law school is the students who come to learn the law, and then put their skills to use beyond our walls.

You can see the joy in learning the law in the pictures of students returning for this spring term. As the first annual Legal Paraprofessional Summit demonstrates – we have an active and highly engaged semester ahead.

Warmly,
