Greetings,

For many students, summer positions with public interest organizations provide a point of entry into the world of public interest law. Many such positions are unpaid, leaving students with difficult financial choices.

This Giving Day, February 13 through 14, we encourage members of the LawCat community to support funds including the Toni M. Massaro Public Interest Student Fellowship Endowment, which funds students in unpaid summer public interest positions. These experiences not only give students the chance to develop legal skills, but also open doors to address access-to-justice gaps through careers in public interest law.

A sincere thank you to all who support our students on Giving Day and throughout the year.

Onward!

Support Student Fellowships This Giving Day

This Valentine’s Day, University of Arizona Law is asking the LawCat community to show your Wildcat love by contributing during Giving Day, a 24-hour fundraising effort from noon on Thursday, February 13 to noon on Friday, February 14 in support of students and the university.

Your generosity ensures that University of Arizona Law is able to train the next generation of leaders and lawyers and allows us to provide a modern, nimble legal education of the highest quality. A legal education is a life-changing experience, and with your support, we can give our students the resources they need to transform their passions and skills into fulfilling careers.

This week we feature one of the three programs supported through Giving Day 2025: the Toni M. Massaro Public Interest Student Fellowship Endowment. See our Giving Day page to learn more about this and other programs supported through the generosity of Giving Day donors.

Toni M. Massaro Public Interest Student Fellowship Endowment

Provide forever funds in honor of Dean Emerita Toni Massaro to support students who accept unpaid summer positions with public interest organizations through fellowships.

The Justice Advocates Coalition (JAC), a student-run organization, complements these efforts by awarding stipends to students undertaking impactful summer roles with nonprofit law organizations.

Students launched the Justice Advocates Coalition in 2017 with the dual goals of empowering marginalized communities and supporting University of Arizona Law students pursuing careers in public interest law.  The Massaro Public Interest Student Fellowship Endowment was created in 2023 to help ensure stable and consistent funding to these students in unpaid summer public interest fellowships.

“It matters to me that that all the work these students have done does not disappear in the desert heat,” said Toni at the time the program was endowed. “There will always be a need, and if anything, I see more students now really wanting to make a dent in the world’s problems through law. These students deserve to have this endure.”

X, @uarizonalaw

As a law student, I benefitted from a fellowship that funded student jobs in public interest positions. These fellowships give students valuable experience while helping to address real legal challenges. The Arizona Law community has always stepped up to support future LawCats, and I have no doubt this year will be the same.

Thank you to everyone who gives on Giving Day and beyond—your support makes a real difference!

Warmly,

Jason
