Law Alumni Weekend

Greetings,

Thank you to the readers of Wildcat Wednesday – alumni and friends of the College – who made a gift during the recent Giving Day campaign. This support has long been, and remains, critical for the success – and access – of our students, and to enable us through study and research and policy work to make a difference in the world.

Read below for highlights from the campaign and the important programs you are helping to propel. These include “A New Day in Court.” You can see the already-impressive progress on this initiative in the video update included in this week’s newsletter.

Until the footnotes,

Marc

Thank You for Your LawCat Love on Giving Day 2024!

University of Arizona Law felt the love from the LawCat community during this year’s Giving Day, a 24-hour fundraising effort in support of students and the university. Thanks to the generosity of over 64 donors, which included alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends, the College raised $54,263 to support A New Day in Court, forever funds in honor of Dean Emerita Toni Massaro for the Justice Advocates Coalition Summer Public Interest Fellowship Program, the Dean’s Innovation Fund and Student Scholarships.

Across campus, the University of Arizona received more than 1,900 gifts during Giving Day, totaling more than $5.7 million.

“We are immensely grateful to all who generously contributed to University of Arizona Law during Giving Day,” said Dean Miller. “Each donation signifies a vote of confidence in our vision and our students’ potential to lead and innovate in an ever-evolving legal landscape. Thank you for your unwavering support.”

Thanks to the generosity and leadership from Brad Vynalek (’99), Jonelle Vold (’01), Megan O’Leary (BA ’02), Vicki Fleischer and a generous LawCat from the class of 1998 for making challenge gifts to encourage giving to University of Arizona Law priorities.

A New Day in Court will fund the construction of two new state-of-the-art student courtrooms, an expansion of faculty support and new experiential learning opportunities.

The Justice Advocates Coalition Summer Public Interest Fellowship Program empowers students pursuing careers in public interest law by providing stipends to students who accept unpaid summer positions with nonprofit organizations.

The Dean’s Innovation Fund allows the Dean to fund University of Arizona Law’s most pressing projects such as our push to accept JD-Next and to create new educational pathways for underrepresented communities. Lastly, Giving Day supported student scholarships that remove financial barriers and allow students to pursue the dream of a legal career.

This year’s Giving Day contributions will go towards the University of Arizona’s Fuel Wonder fundraising campaign with the overall goal of raising $3 billion for the students faculty, and programs that make up the university ecosystem. As part of the campaign, the James E. Rogers College of Law has established its own goals to launch new projects, provide students with unprecedented levels of support and amplify programs that make a meaningful impact in our communities.

It’s not too late to participate.

If you missed Giving Day, consider giving in support of the college today.

Fueling Progress: An Update on Fuel Wonder Initiatives

The “A New Day in Court” construction project is an effort to transform the student experience at University of Arizona Law, beginning with the construction of new state-of-the-art courtroom, classroom and lobby spaces that will literally put litigation skills front and center in our law school. We broke ground in January and so much has been done already. See how the space is transforming in this video.

Prof. Sepe Curates ESG Speaker Series

A new University of Arizona Center for the Philosophy of Freedom talk series, “Justice, Law, and Capitalism - Exploring Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) from a Legal, Economic, and Philosophical Perspective,” is being curated by Chester H. Smith Professor and Professor of Law and Finance Simone M. Sepe and Freedom Center Associate Director and Assistant Professor of Political Economy and Moral Science Saura Masconale.

The ESG series, which began in February and runs through April, presents an in-depth examination of Environmental, Social and Governance considerations through the insights of nationally renowned scholars. Prof. Milczarek-Desai Joins University of Arizona Libraries Panel on Sanctuary at the Border

Associate Professor of Law Shefali Milczarek-Desai (JD/MA ’01) recently joined a panel discussion at University of Arizona’s Manuel Pacheco Integrated Learning Center Lecture Hall to celebrate the opening of the Special Collections exhibit “Sanctuary: Who Belongs Here? The Search for Homeland on the U.S.-Mexico Border, 1848 to Today.” The panel included activists from the 1980’s movement and scholars studying and participating in today’s refugee-aid efforts to address the past, present and future of sanctuary on the border.

The exhibit, which runs through August, features some of the Special Collections’ extensive archives that tell the story of sanctuary on the border from multiple perspectives. With a particular focus on Arizona and Sonora, these collections reveal how different communities have come together to create a thriving multicultural region that has often been at the forefront of global movements for social, economic and environmental justice. A short video from the University of Arizona Libraries includes some of the perspectives in the exhibit.
