This week we profile Judge Roxanne Song Ong ('78).
And we encourage you to join us at the 42nd Annual LCA Appreciation Dinner
where we will honor Judge Song Ong and five other
remarkable individuals.
As well, we bring more good news from the world of
student moot court competitions -- this time from the
UA's first-ever team to compete in the Giles S. Rich
Intellectual Property Competition.
Until the footnotes,

The Honorable Roxanne
Song Ong ('78) |
The
Law College Association and the University of Arizona
Alumni Association will present the UAAA Public Service
Award to the Honorable Roxanne Song Ong, Class of
1978.
Judge Song Ong served on the bench for nearly 30
years, breaking new ground as the first Asian American
woman judge in Arizona.
A Phoenix native, Judge Song Ong began
her career practicing in the areas of criminal
prosecution, defense, and immigration law, followed by
five years on the Scottsdale City Court, beginning in
1986.

judge for the Phoenix Municipal Court and in 2000 was
appointed Assistant Presiding Judge. She was Chief
Presiding Judge from 2005 until her retirement from the
court in late 2014.
Judge Song Ong's term
was marked by advances in the management of DUI cases
and the introduction of specialty courts to address
cases involving populations with significant financial,
psychological, behavioral, physical and related
challenges. She continues to serve as Pro Tem Judge for
other jurisdictions in Arizona.
Upon her retirement, Chief Justice Scott Bales of
the Arizona Supreme Court wrote:
"While ably leading
the Phoenix Municipal Court, [Judge Song Ong] has
devoted countless hours working to improve the
administration of justice in Arizona by helping to train
other judges and serving on various statewide court
committees. She has also been actively engaged in her
community by speaking to students in hundreds of
classes, appearing at career days, and judging mock
trial competitions."

Rich Intellectual Property
Moot Court Competition |
"Please join me in
congratulating Jingyuan ("Joey") Zhou (3L) and Ryan
Wekerle (2L), of UA's first Giles S. Rich IP moot court
competition team, for their achievements at the regional
meet in Houston, Texas on March 12.
Ryan was singled out
for his exceptional knowledge of the law, Joey won the
award for best advocacy in the final round of the
regional meet, and the team was one of ten teams from
across the country advancing to the national finals at
the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in
Washington, D.C. Teams left in the dust and staying home
for the finals from the Southwest region included teams
from the University of Texas, two teams from SMU, and a
team from the University of Houston, all institutions
with excellent programs in intellectual
property.
Congratulations and
thanks also go out to Evan Speciale, Brian Louis and
Professor Ron Brown for their continuing help in getting
our team ready.
The Giles S. Rich
Moot Court Competition is the oldest and most
prestigious moot court completion in the field of
intellectual property and the only national completion
specifically directed to the area of patent
law."
Congratulations again to Joey and Ryan and to those
who helped prepare
them. |

Seeking
Internships for BA in Law Undergrads
If your organization, law firm or business could
use some support this summer (or during the school year
if you are based in Tucson), let us help you recruit an
undergraduate student intern.
Students who are
pursuing the BA in Law are receiving a top-notch legal
education from Arizona Law faculty, taking undergraduate
courses in property law, contracts, torts, procedure,
and criminal law and procedure, among others. They are
eager to apply their knowledge in paid or unpaid
internships. Since such experiences are meant to prepare
them for law-related careers (rather than JD internships
meant to prepare students to work as attorneys),
internship providers have more flexibility in the work
that these students can be assigned, so long as they are
gaining an educational benefit.
For more information,
please contact Najwa Nabti, Director of the
Undergraduate Law Program (nabti@email.arizona.edu or
520-626-8373).

Another victory in a top moot court
competition. Another conference. Another
award for a faculty member. And this was all
during Spring Break!
Life in the college now returns to full
speed, with the rich mix of lectures, workshops, major
events and news. Indeed (spoiler alert) there
will be news of another top national award for a faculty
member next week . .
.
Warmly,
Dean
& Ralph W. Bilby Professor of Law

the next century of legal
