Class of 2025: JD Grad Josh Roubik’s Law School Journey Rooted in People, Policy and Purpose

From environmental engineering to environmental law, Class of 2025 JD graduate Josh Roubik has followed a path defined by curiosity, conviction and connection. After earning his undergraduate degree in environmental engineering from Northern Arizona University, Josh was inspired to pursue a law degree.

“I am a nerd,” he says. “I became interested in policy and law through my volunteer experience with Citizens Climate Lobby, a nonprofit that lobbies Congress to pass climate change legislation. Then, I began listening to legal podcasts and fell in love with the law. I saw how the law impacted people’s lives through my volunteer work and saw the law as a way to make a difference. But candidly, I was also motivated by the idea that I could nerd out for three years.”

At Arizona Law he found the perfect environment to do just that. He also found a close-knit community that supported him through one of the most difficult times of his life—losing his mother just before the start of his second year.

“The people at this school stepped up to care for me,” he recalls. “They made me dinner, took notes for me, were a shoulder to cry on and generally did more for me than I ever could have asked. On the day of the funeral, they drove to Phoenix to be there and back for class in the afternoon. People I had known for less than a year dropped everything to be there for me. I will forever be grateful they were there for me in my lowest moments.”

FROM THE COLLEGE

Introducing Dominique Martinez-Ahumada, the New Associate Director of Alumni Engagement & Donor Relations

If you have been in touch with the Alumni and Development Office in the past few months, you may have seen more of Dominique Martinez-Ahumada. In March Dominique began her role as the Associate Director of Alumni Engagement & Donor Relations.

Dominique is no stranger to Arizona Law and to the Alumni and Development Office. She is also a BA in Law student and has been a student intern in the office since 2023.

We are pleased to officially introduce Dominique and ask her a little more about her time at Arizona Law.

What interested you in the BA in Law program?

I first came across the BA in Law program when I was in high school, while researching pre-law options. What stood out to me was that this wasn’t just a pre-law track—it was a full undergraduate degree in law, which is really rare. I loved that the program was designed to prepare students for a variety of careers where legal training makes a difference.

What experiences and activities as a BA in Law student have been most meaningful to you?

The classes have honestly been one of the best parts. I’ve enjoyed learning alongside people who are just as motivated and interested in law as I am and it’s also been really rewarding to be part of that kind of community.

One thing that’s made a huge difference is having professors who actually teach at the law school. It’s such a unique part of the program, and I feel really grateful that we get to learn directly from people who are experts in the field and actively connected to the legal world. Being in the Pre-Law Society gave me the chance to hear directly from attorneys and professionals who shared their personal journeys, and that really inspired me to stay on this path.

You previously worked as a student intern with alumni engagement. Based on that experience, how would you describe the Arizona Law alumni community?

Supportive is the first word that comes to mind. Every alum I’ve had the chance to meet has shown how much they care about Arizona Law and its students. Whether its through donations or taking time out of their day to offer advice, do mock interviews or share insights, they’re always willing to give back. It made me realize how strong and connected the LawCat community really is.

What are you optimistic about in your new role?

I’m looking forward to everything I’ll get to learn. After almost two years as a student intern, I’m excited to take the next step and grow even more. I see this new role as a chance to keep building my skills, work with new people and contribute in a more meaningful way. I’m also eager to bring my own perspective to the table and keep developing both personally and professionally!

Is there any message you’d like to share with the LawCat community?

Being part of the LawCat community has meant a lot to me. I’ve learned so much from the people around me—alumni, classmates, professors—and I’m constantly inspired by the dedication and support that runs through this network. To those who came before us: thank you for laying the groundwork and showing us what’s possible. To those still walking the path: keep going. You’re making a difference, even when it’s hard to see.

If you ever want to connect, have questions or just want to chat, feel free to email me at alexisdominique@arizona.edu. I love meeting members of the community and hearing about different journeys and experiences. I’m grateful to be part of something that continues to grow, adapt and support each other every step of the way!
