Greetings,

Celebrations abound! It was a pleasure to see so many of you during the Homecoming events last weekend. Photos and highlights coming soon to a newsletter near you...

This week, we feature the celebration of alumna Roopali Desai’s confirmation to the Ninth Circuit. We are proud to see one of our own confirmed – with strong bi-partisan support – to the federal appellate bench.

Also coming soon: Arizona Supreme Court arguments on campus and the friendly rivalry with Arizona State University resumes in the Jenckes Competition. Finally, looking back on some other recent enjoyable moments on and around campus, the SBA picnic held in September and Halloween fun.

Until the footnotes,

Arizona Law Celebrates the Confirmation of Alumna Roopali Desai (’05) as 9th Circuit Judge

On September 30, University of Arizona Law celebrated the nomination and confirmation of alumna Roopali Desai (JD ’05, MPH ’01, BA ’00) to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The event was attended by Desai, faculty, students, family and friends.

Desai was confirmed by the United States Senate this past August in a 67–29 vote, the most votes that any circuit court nominee has received since President Biden took office and just 50 days after her initial nomination, the fastest of any Circuit Court nominee since the Clinton Administration. Desai is the first South Asian judge to sit on the country’s largest federal appeals court.

“Her trajectory took her far from campus, but not too far,” said University of Arizona Law Dean Marc Miller to attendees. “I have watched her career from afar with admiration .”

On Friday, September 23, students, professors, staff and family members spent a joyful evening with plenty of food from Seis Kitchen at Reid Park’s Ramada 22 for the annual SBA Picnic. This year’s SBA Picnic welcomed over 300 attendees!

Sophia Rankin and the Sound played live music and there were various games for all ages, including a large inflatable. This year’s picnic also welcomed dozens of pets.

SBA Executive Programming Coordinator John Van De Graaff (2L) and SBA President Sarah Gerstel (3L) led the efforts in organizing and executing one of the most successful SBA Picnics. SBA thanks everyone who attended the event and hopes it was a relaxing evening for all!

Congratulations to Our Jenckes Finalists!

Our team is set for the annual Joseph Jenckes Competition, a closing arguments competition between students of the University of Arizona and Arizona State University. After preliminary rounds to select Arizona Law team members, including a final round with the six finalists, the team of Derek Kilgore and Jade DuBoy was chosen. The third runner-up Max Larnerd will also be working to help the team prepare.

The Jenckes Competition has been held for more than 50 years, is sponsored by the American College of Trial Lawyers, and is hosted each year by one of the two universities.

The final competition this year will be held at ASU on November 10, beginning at 5:00 p.m. All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend and support our team.

Arizona Supreme Court Arguments Come to Campus Nov. 9

As part of its ongoing public education effort, the Arizona Supreme Court will be holding arguments at the University of Arizona on November 9.

The justices have identified two cases to be presented, and attorneys representing each side will be given 20 minutes to present their arguments. After the second case, the justices will take questions from the audience, as long as those questions do not pertain to the cases they just heard.

When: Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2022, 2-4 p.m. Guests for case 1 must arrive no later than 1:15 p.m. in order to go through security screening. Check-in for case 2 starts at 2:15 p.m. There is no courtroom entry once court is in session.

Where: Ares Auditorium, Room 164, University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law, 1201 E. Speedway Blvd.

Who may attend: Seating is limited and available to those who have registered prior to the event. Members of the public are welcome on a first-come, first-served basis as remaining space allows.

HalLAWeen Hijinx

This week, SBA hosted HaLAWeen activities for students, faculty and staff complete with a costume contest, pumpkin painting and “trick-or-treaters” (students in costumes).

Elsewhere around the college, students of Professor Thomas Mauet (pictured right, not in costume) enjoyed Halloween in the classroom. Students appeared in class as video game characters, in Prof. Mauet’s trademark blue shirt and khakis, and more.

50th Class reunion with the Law Class of 1972

This is a busy time of year – with Homecoming, followed by the attention to the shrinking window left in the fall term. For many members of the community, the turn to cooler days and cool nights is a welcome change.

It was a delight to see so many people over the Homecoming weekend. We needed to nurture our community and the community responded. We will share more pictures of the Homecoming events in the weeks to come.

Warmly,
