Snell & Wilmer Hosts Reception for First-Generation Law Students

A few weeks ago, the Tucson office of Snell & Wilmer hosted the annual reception for the Arizona Law First Circuit Program, an initiative to support first-generation law students with strategic programming, mentorship networks and peer support.

The event marked five years of Snell & Wilmer supporting the program with wisdom, talent and a friendly space. It was the largest reception to date, for the largest ever First Circuit cohort. Students and attorneys enjoyed an open, rich and candid conversation about working and balancing life in a large law firm.

Attendees from the firm included Arizona Law alumni Courtney Henson (’13), Ben Hawkins (’17), Gaby Morlock (’19), Emily Thomason (’23) and Roxanne Veliz (’95), as well as attorneys Alex Bevans and Joe Kroeger.

Thanks to our hosts for the warm welcome and ongoing support of the program!

Ninth Circuit Cites Prof. Eunice Lee in Opinion on Immigrant Detention

Judge Marsha S. Berzon, writing for a majority of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, cited Associate Professor of Law Eunice C. Lee’s article, “The End of Entry Fiction,” 99 N.C. L. Rev. 565 (2021), in a decision on the viability of due process challenges to mandatory immigration detention. The Ninth Circuit concluded the due process challenge was in fact viable, affirming denial of the government’s motion to dismiss.

The court cited Prof. Lee’s work describing the history of the “entry fiction,” a narrow exception to due process rights afforded to noncitizens. The entry fiction allows noncitizens entering the U.S. at a point of entry into the country only for the purpose of determining admissibility, but they are treated as though they were stopped at the border for the purpose of determining certain legal rights including due process.

The Ninth Circuit rejected the government’s argument in this case that the class of asylum seekers seeking bond hearings for immigration detention lacked due process rights.

Jenckes Competitors Chosen to Represent Arizona Law

Arizona Law recently hosted the annual Jenckes Closing Argument Competition. The two winners, Danielle Zazhar and Lauren Romaguera, will represent us in the annual Jenckes Competition versus Arizona State University Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law in November, this year hosted by ASU.

The finalists are:

  • 1st place: Danielle Zazhar
  • 2nd place: Lauren Romaguera
  • 3rd place: Danny Fisher
  • 4th place: Justin Terrill
  • 5th place: Mason Hagemann

Front row: Danielle Zazhar, Lauren Romaguera;
Back row: Danny Fisher, Justin Terrill, Mason Hagemann

Congratulations to all finalists, thanks to our judges, and good luck to Danielle and Lauren in Phoenix!

The Homecoming festivities approaching next week and the recent reception at Snell & Wilmer illustrate an integral dimension of our college, when students, alumni and friends gather to connect and support one another.

This week’s newsletter also highlighted two other crucial components of Arizona Law: the leading scholarship of our faculty and the opportunities for students to gain practical skills through activities like competition teams.

Onward,

Jason
