FROM THE COLLEGE

New Staff Attorney Joins UA Innocence Project

This fall, the University of Arizona Innocence Project welcomed Cary Sandman as a staff attorney.

Cary has been practicing in Tucson since 1976 and was court appointed to his first death penalty case, a resentencing proceeding, in 1978. Several years later, Cary joined a midsize law firm, where he concentrated his practice on commercial, intellectual property and real estate litigation.

In the early 1990s, with the blessing of his law firm, he took on a federal habeas death penalty case. That case led to an invitation to take on another case and then another. In 2011, after 35 years in the private sector, Cary decided to leave his firm and joined the Arizona Federal Public Defender’s Office, where he represented death-sentenced prisoners in their habeas corpus proceedings. During his time with the Federal Defender’s Office, Cary (and his teammates) won relief for several of his clients, including Ha’im Sharif. In 2017, Mr. Sharif was released from prison after serving 28 years on Nevada’s death row. Cary also represented Barry Jones, who, in 2023, was released from prison after 28 years on Arizona death row.

Miguel-Stearns Featured on AI and Law Libraries

Teresa Miguel-Stearns, professor of law and director of the Daniel F. Cracchiolo Law Library, was recently featured by her own law school alma mater, the University of Richmond School of Law, in an article about the future of law libraries with the rise of AI.

“It’s put more demand on us as librarians to ensure that our faculty, our students, and our public patrons understand the limitations of the tools they are using,” Prof. Miguel-Stearns said in the article about technological advances like generative AI.

The article also discussed the Cracchiolo Law Library’s leadership on conversations around AI and law libraries, as well as Arizona Law’s new Master of Legal Studies/Master of Arts in Library & Information Sciences joint degree.

Video Replay of Soll Lecture on the Future of American Criminal Justice with Philadelphia DA Larry Krasner

Last week, we hosted the annual Darrow K. Soll Memorial Criminal Law and Justice Lecture featuring Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner speaking on the future of American criminal justice.
