Heather Spielmaker Joins University of Arizona Law as Assistant Dean for Career Development

We are pleased to introduce Heather Spielmaker, our new assistant dean for career development.

Before joining University of Arizona Law, Heather led the career services offices at the University of Kansas School of Law and the West Virginia University College of Law. During her time at KU, the college was in the top 5% of ABA accredited schools for full-time, long-term legal jobs ten months after graduation, and while at West Virginia she doubled the size of the school’s on-campus interview program.

“I’m excited to work with the high caliber of students at University of Arizona Law and to help each find a career path that will be meaningful and rewarding,” Heather said. “The Career Development Office will be a welcoming, accessible, and respectful place for all, offering exceptional programming and helping students achieve excellent career outcomes. We hope to be supportive stewards of the university and a great office to work with.”

In addition to extensive resources and interviewing opportunities available to all students and alumni, the Career Development Office will continue to counsel current and recently graduated law students through the changing job market as they take their first critical steps into their chosen profession. The office also works directly with a wide range of employers including law firms, public interest organizations, the judiciary, businesses and compliance consultants both throughout the region and nation-wide, to provide ideal candidates and information on hiring trends.

LawCats Live Discusses Legal Paraprofessional Program

On September 12, Keith Swisher, Director of the Arizona Law BA in Law and Master of Legal Studies Program, moderated the ongoing LawCats Live webinar series.

During the conversation, Judge Maria Elena Cruz (BA ’98, JD ’01), Justice Ann Timmer (BA ’82) and Aaron Nash, Director of the Arizona Administrative Office of the Courts’ (AOC) Certification and Licensing Division discussed the Legal Paraprofessional Program and how it addresses the justice gap in Arizona.

A video of the discussion is available to anyone who couldn’t make it to the event. To learn more about our Legal Paraprofessional Program, see the program website or request more information.

Most of our JD and other graduate law students come to be trained as lawyers, or to receive additional or advanced training in the law, and then be licensed and practice – whether in private or public, local, national, tribal or international realms.

A great faculty and staff are critical to that objective, including the support of the Career Development Office, which we daily and colloquially refer to by the initials CDO.

We have been fortunate to have superb leadership in our career office through several generations of leaders. That fortune continues with success in our national search, and the interest and excitement of Heather Spielmaker in taking the helm.

Please join me in welcoming Heather – and please get to know her, and our whole CDO team, so that we can best support both our students and the many employers who look to us for excellent graduates.

Warmly,
